  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New project...

So...

...this new project...

With the encoding scheme you loss, data would be much more recoverable with minimumal loss. I cant remember everything, but apart from Reed Solomon like schemes, you can store multiple copies in different locations, you could even apply another rs like layer of encoding to that, and another scheem.I came up with (was trying to do a maximum strength os feature.

So, I regard an archive as something where you archive data, sorted or not, random access or not. Now, you get at something like what I like the interactive repository of knowledge. But my repositories are simple practical ambitions. Some little "stones" that people can figure out to read, to recover the practical good stuff of the human race. Machines that can maintain knowledge that you can enquire of is another thing in the mix, and not unheard of in scifi. But a proposal of mine for years, is a database of all good scientific knowledge ranked and criss linked, that is constantly added to with new results. It originally was to include more, quarantined information only approved people will see, for obvious reasons, but people can get around that. However, such a system is a good trap for people seeking harm. Immediately you see an unortharised person sniffing around bad stuff in order to determine the hidden stuff (search terms) the security servuces know they have a potential suspect to keep an eye on. The use of search terms is insideouse, as it flags tjem.befote they can even get near the boundarues of the science. Even if they go directly, being there flags them, aa not being tbe sort of person that should be able to go directly to that part of tje database, flags a strange agenda. Now, neural networks can do much of the tracking, and flag directly to a human when a sufficient pattern of usage of related or potentially related people, constitutes a potential real threat. So, 999 times out of a 1000 say, the human never needs to know about. That statement itself is enough to get me big defence and intelligence contracts, as the amount of data to shift through is enough to drown resources, when most of it is idle chatter or exploration. The reality maybe even over 1000000 to one. It could be enough to keep over a million people spying on what is saud over there, which could easily be 200 billuon dollers annually, givem a good pay and infrastructure and management costs, replaced at a fraction of the costs by neural (or simply software).

Anyway, the actual point of the scientific data base (also an additional practical knowledge database of evert day knowledge) is to advanced scientific knowledge more quickly, and industry What happens, is that researchers are unfamiliar with most of the research out there, as there is so much. So they maybe unfamiliar with key research relevant to what they want to achieve, or people doing the same or related research. With this, the research and results are fed in and linked to a knowledge tree, all of it, and ranked to credibility, and such forth. Now, if you want to, or are (sorry my descriptions here are very sloppy, I'm rather swollen this morning) researching a particular thing, you can go to that things part of the tree and see if others have done the same research on it, the results, any things left to research that has not been filled and verified on the tree (an empty node) or add nodes of new things to look at. What this gives you is a more even and rapid wall of research advancing. What happens at the moment is disjoint, with vast unreadable volumes of published research, and even larger volumes of unpublished research kept down and out by the money greedy man (the tree itself encourages weeding out and pruning or bad information). So currently we have threads and pieces, columns, of wall sticking out unevenly, unable to sufficiently access what is around them, as related facts maybe in another location on the wall. The tree also shows everybody what needs to be researched and verified, rapidly advancing research to fill in the blanks. So science, and various parts like biology, chemistry, health and technology in particular, could advance many times faster. A thiusand yesrs of advancenent could ve archueved in ten years even (not 100x in volume but less, as remaining research tends to take longer to do ffir kess resukts, that is what is being speeded up in partivular. This maybe 10x more actual knowledge, hard to tell.

Now, I presented examples of technology for paasive archives and active archives that are interactuve. Im nkt implying that qca is good fir very long term passive archiving.

Now, entrophopy of data. For longterm passive I implied that position and structure (holes and pits) are much more reliable than level of energy. As a lot of corruption that can happen to these leave evident signs of what was originally there. But as for active energy level bits electronics were invented because they were easier to maintain and restore level. In the same way, drift can be observed to corrected. The energy from corruption only needs to be enough to trigger a repair that can be done with latter energy. However tbere ate other techniques, and the energy of corruption may exceed that needed to restore corruption. Energy however, doesnt dissapear and can be channeled. Sorry, have to rush.

I'll try to get back about the digital paper.

Eric, sorry had to rush off, and a lot swollen weak since my return.

There has been a lot of research in volumetric recording. I've been reading about recording 'transparent cubes" since the 80's I think. They have had viable technology since the 1990's I think, but densities were low, I think probably due to issues with precision. I haven't read anything for years. I resolved how to place a write point in 3D space, through a number of separate methods, mainly due to my desire to make a volumetric display, but also to scan under ground in archaeological sites and medically, most last decade, maybe display then archeology, then medically then display, then medically. It's like I can look at the problem space of what they are doing currently, then perceive how to do it differently. These things are just so useful.

Anyway, have a look up my posts on recording 50cm maybe a meter square platters. I have a method that could hit a subatomic area with a photon. All this stuff of not having anything good past 20 years is just the way that that group looks at it. If you, as you probably well know with what you are doing, look at things from the perspective of your sector (in this case the archivalist or storage technologists sectors) you limit the number of new things you can find, rather than using everything you can find. It is a group think problem.

Hitting 3D precision over 3 axis of space is another thing, but say my technique could achieve it with subatomic precision, it not only means that you can get atomic level is a massive cube, recording, but also possibly be able to place energy at a shell. Side note, eventually the precision needed to aim requites smaller than the plank length precision in the mechanism. If I could place at plank length level over broad areas, it would bring into question if plank length is the smallest length. I've got an idea floating in my head, if it can violate plank length it would open an interesting thing. Of course it shouldn't, unless we are in a truly Infinitely analogue universe. So, it is worth trying. It goes more advanced then this, and finally into wherever you can build subatomic matrixes. Of course the problem with all this stuff, is the target itself moves. So, don't matter about the aim (unless you can compensate for the movement, ah there's another idea related to that) you still are up around atomic level.

Now, there is something else, what if the recorded medium was a matrix of an element, and writing was downgrading the element to another element, by inducing decay. The more levels of decay you induce, below the baseline, the longer it will take the baseline to decay and corrupt the image. Again, position trumps, as the base material would have to decay to nothing, to hide a hole. Funny, my phone is running hot writing this stuff, when it shouldnt.

Haven't found that digital paper. It was some sort of polycarb, which was made into tape format for convenience. It was a modern punch tape.

Anyway, here is a separate invention I have come across that might be amusing:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paper_disc

This is great stuff I've come across before on DVD, and likely includes a technique I'm using which might accommodate some of the seeming difference between claims and estimated performance.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainbow_storage

The paper disc is cool. The rainbow storage... well, that is great as a thesis for an engineering student, for sure, but I don't see it going anywhere. I once had an idea (but could not actually specify) a system which used a flat sheet of film to store data in a 2D grid (opaque for Zero, transparent for One), and was readable with a cathode ray. It would work, no doubt, but it would also be clunky.

I had a thought this morning about holographic storage. By definition, it would mean that you could store a given amount of data onto a thin substrate, and it would have innate error correction. However, why go to the trouble? What we really want: density, cost, seek time, reliablity, longevity. Fancy hologram systems just complicate things.

IMHO.

Complex, you are not joking. Holographic seems to have just disappeared suddenly. Give the rainbow guy a break though. I once wanted to do 2D printed patterns, probably 80's, to distribute programs cheaply on magazines. Still a good idea. For certain things it is cheaper to make in house and distribute rather than buy in. That was then. Now I would have a related near field or micro sd like usb chip (there is cheap write once technology like this that sandisk bought into). You can insert a card like device (and there are usb card formats like that) into the usb slot, on one side of the terminal. With near field, you can embed it in the magazine cover. But still, since my early printed data musings, they have done it with phone cameras, and probably scanners before me. However, I did want to do a simply printed electronic circuit using 2400dpi + printing with digital ink. You maybe able to use it like usb, but can put nearfeild in. The circuites I looked at after went to optical computing. Still a secret.

You can still make money. My read write technology means you can put it on a magazine that has a thin layer with greater than ultra violet disk (600 GB) relatively cheap, no downloads, with no spinning. Hopefully outperforming all other current media in read and write vastly.

My own tape mechanism should be able to increase storage capacity many times with better reliability for archival storage.

Eric, found digital paper, a bit different than I thought it, but probably because in the 1980's they compared it to punch cards and punch tape. However, what I said, holes and pits is better for archival, then melting through dyes. It was probably before its time in ideal efficiency. Now laser diode arrays are cheaper, more powerful, better precision, and high data rate electronics cheaper. But its real potential is long term archive (see below).

Now, having a punch through recording on a atomic level, requires supporting surrounding matrix structure (note) for a layer to stay together. With a substrate, this surrounding structure is still needed, to help maintain layer integrity. Now the substrate can be the recording medium, so basically just picks. There is another way which I'm avoiding, as it is not as good.

Now, I'll talk a bit about my own desires. An metal/alloy setup to stop corrosion. The structure of the medium and substrate and coating etc, can do this. A structured matrix foil gives it strength. So sub micron might be possible. The increased power of lasers to make metal practical.

Here are some interesting pages on it. Some are sealed, so I don't know if they have much more practical information.

Well, many people are waiting for someone to make a proper fucking photographic film scanner. The cine scanners are great but expensive. And how about finding something other than silver for film? Pipe dreams, I know.

Been plenty non silver. You can also buy those cheap usb camera film scanners :) But really, what's the issue, what sort of film? Digital Photolab equipment would have some good scanners to digitise film stock.

June. Which means maybe week after next we may hear a little.

I don't think that aniline dyes are as sensitive. Maybe I'm not up to speed on the technology? As for film scanners, nothing photographic matches cinema scanners. Goodness knows why.

There's a 32 speed 35mm b&w film, Spur Orthopan, which out-resolves any digital sensor I can name, including medium format. Now, take that amazing resolving power and make it four stops more sensitive, and you have a killer product. Good luck! ;-)

I am not an expert on film. I know of old sensors with over 27 stops of range with constant color throughout the range I know of new sensors that can detect single photons (even those are getting on) and extreme low noise tech. But my own film proposal was a hypersensitive wide spectrum film based on old tech not related to film. Maybe it beats everything on the market, I don't know yet, it may not have suitable characteristics. But it is a bit pointless to make, as with the sensor technology out there, you can do a killer sensor in excess of helium. As it is, the biggest sensors are in excess of 4 billion pixels I think, and the digital cinema sensor (now something quantum sensor, or other) is capable of pixels 50 nanometers or less from memory. Film is going to have a hard time in cinema. I mean, I wasn't crazy about these 70mm new films. The sensor design I'm thinking of now is pretty revolutionary, pixels well below 50 nm and even able to record on the sensor chips memory.

Now, the photographic film stuff, we have top photographers that send their stuff to Sydney, sure they would have good film scanners at such places. If not, it is a good opportunity for a cine scanner company to make film versions surely? But you asked two open questions that were easy to answer  I don't even remember what they use for color separation on cinema film? If you want you can use your Monochrome film with a prism for three color separation on one film roll (there used to be a format that did that with maybe three film rolls).

Who are you... and WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH WAYNE!

Oh... nice touch by-the-way, of sprinkling a few spelling errors in to make us believe you are Wayne, but otherwise, the entire post is too clear and concise. I ask again, who are you?

ASIDE: Methinks Wayne's account has been hacked. '-)

Very funny, I don't know something and aren't that clear and insightful, and you think I'm being more clear.

Ever see the Starwars movie where they are all in session with the chancellor, but can"t see clearly the truth because the darkside clouds the truth. That is what its like around here sometimes, the dark ones come confused as anything, white becomes black, black white or purple or orange, but not black, that's what it gets like around here. I wonder why. SW is like an classic anti type of life (alternative), it is life and truth that becomes obscured, and people choose darkness. Oh, yes, and maybe even according to these people Donald Trump even becomes the first black president of the united states.

Elsie, you could at least let me go back and correct the spelling first. :)

O.K. this post is the Wayne we all know and love... Not sure what you said but love the way you are saying it. '-)

Throw those meds away... you are much more interesting when you're off them. '-)

I don't take meds.
