  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New project...

Sounds like "they" are at that last one percent and as we all know, that is probably 99% harder than the first 99 per cent. Looking forward to when "it" happens.

I'm not smart enough to know the nomenclature but I'm going with some type of internal perceptual 'projection' built on the backbone of a vector based codec to keep streaming file sizes manageable yet super high quality.

Or sunglasses.

I love that Jim is what I would call a "Pathological designer" in that no matter how hard he tries he can't NOT design or invent or improve stuff... It's absolutely compulsive and he is still the same guy (seemingly), to the core of his being that designed and made and produced the first Oakley grip in spite of all the other terrific achievements (whether they be recognized by various industries or award bodies or not).

My take (ish) is that by saying " AR and VR are now officially obsolete" , Jim is not saying that he/they have come up with better VR or AR "Tech" but he's saying that it's largely irrelevant for mass media usage by most people and that he's working on something that is media-rich and complex that makes AR and VR seem very crude in terms of overall system design and usage and intrinsic VALUE by comparison.

My "Hunch" is imagine something along the lines of something that can take a bite out of Google Earth but WAY better, in terms of media content and "Production value". If you have a really accurate position and orientation data for a camera that is well calibrated (in near photogrammetric terms), then all the stills, moving footage and even stereo/ overlapping imagery can all be projectively mapped to their correct "Space" in 2d or 3d or rendered anyway you like. The Google Earth like data base can come from the "Cloud" and you can integrate your imagery to the "Space" or Data base. So... that has about a million applications, from base line condition reports of Heritage sites to endangered natural habitats or function as pre-viz or storyboard system or just use it as method for organizing complex information... Almost goes back to some of the original ideas and psychology of the Xerox Park group and how we interface with information... (Which in turn was inspired by how Cicero mentally and visually organized information in his own mind). I think this is where and what Jim may be alluding to is something that is fairly fundamental but COMPLEX. Hence "Mind numbing". More accurate GPS devices combined with solid state accurate devices for position and orientation, time codes/ stamp means that every frame you take is located in 3d space to the world Geoid (and for that slice of time). So with on line data bases with base line 3d data you can hang a LOT of imagery on that one for many many different real world and valuable applications. I think that's a much better use of "Space" and "Time" and "Travel" than the lame pissing contest between Google and Microsoft to turn the real world into advertising space or a laughable operating system? (Maybe?). But fundamentally the nice thing is that you can traverse such notional data bases in time also... From time of day to time of year or actual year. Do that for a few decades or a hundred years or more then you have an incredibly useful and valuable record that is in a sense pre-organized by space, orientation and time... And many many people can contribute to that "Data base" with their correctly referenced imagery, so I would imagine that would encourage a lot of people to travel and as it were to "Fill in the blanks" over time for the best and most complete imagery/record. Better and more fun/interesting and useful/valuable than Pokémon "Catch them all" LOL.

I'm pretty sure there are some good hints in Racing Extinction. I have watched the trailer and will / should buy the disk. There's a lot of projection of imagery there it seems... :-)

I am frustrated.

The development time to release of the 1st Oakley grip almost sent me to the hospital with a nervous breakdown. The 1st Oakley goggle was 9 months late. The 1st Oakley sunglass was a year late. The 1st RED camera was over a year late. The RED EPIC was more than 2 years late.

Everyone forgets that changing the world is not easy. Not me.

This new project already has me depressed. It is the most mind-numbing project I have ever worked on. I am more excited than ever . But delays in development have me up at 3am... just like old times.

I want nothing more than to share what the future will be. But sharing too early gives a roadmap to the competition.

Trust me when I tell you that this is big. The biggest. It should not be surprising that it has also proven to be the most difficult project I have ever worked on.

"Everything can and will be made better. It is just a matter of when and by whom." I said this back in 1975. It is true today.

I will say that AR and VR are now officially obsolete...

Jim

A couple things here, don't work so hard that you make your self unhealthy or worse, that will really slow the project down. And Im sure we are all good with delays other wise we would not be RED Users...
Looking forward to this big announcement. But say healthy mentally and physically.

And don't forget to eat your Wheaties! '-)

well, that definitely ranks as the most intriguing post of the year....

so many of the most exciting developments seem to happen at 3am, so this is good news.

I have been there in a very different way I imagine, sharing too soon can do much worst, it has to me... Lessons learned!!

I believe in you Jim, always had...

Keep it your secret... Keep at it... And bring it on.. We'll wait!!

Still, so bummed my vector display/codec concept was taken.

Yes, maybe Jim would like to come back at 3am for a chat.

Instead of AR or VR we're going to have Reality . . . where you actually go outside and experience stuff ;-)

Well, you have to have somebody to do something with in reality. So, life like android. Or clones of ourselves of opposite sex, so we can marry them.

The time for the average person to complete a complex task is often the timeframe they refer to when judging if 'something is taking too long'.

These are likely people whom have never challenged to what others have never attempt, and do not have what it takes to keep going something until it is complete.

For those people, I would shy away from sharing concepts until the time-frame is one that they can grapple without judgement.

Lol, that's so funny.

Eric, welcome back. I was wondering if Jim was working with you guys.

Good to see some intelligent conversation.

Long time reader, and don't really post that much but I have a feeling it has to do with Magic Leap or the new technology they are developing ... What they are doing is amazing and I have a feeling RED being the awesome company they are, they must (or should) be involved.

... Just a thought while I wait for my RAVEN :)
