Are there going to be any Red Ram drives offered newer less expensive SSD's? I just picked up the new Agility 120 GB drive from OCZ for $324. These may not be as fast as the drives in the Red Ram but would be a heck of a lot faster than the drives in the Red Raid and with the durability of an SSD.

If you compare prices and parts I would say that we could see a new set of Red Ram for about $1300. This is based on a 240 GB drive. I am sure a 120 GB drive such as the Red Ram is now could be produced a little cheaper.

No ideas, but if I go back 3 years i think I expected cheaper and better storage options by now.
I really hope that storage options for Epic will not be more expensive than what we have now, even for the higher data rates.

With that said, I know the RED requires more from it storage options, and we all know how extremly crucial it is that the images we record actually are recorded. So RED can´t allow themselves to take any chances on our behalf.

Mr. R Schorman, I don't think that there would be much wrong with the new SSD's compared to the laptop hard-drives that are in the Red Raid right now.

SSD's

Hi,

I did some testing with SSD's last year when I built out my DIT MacPro with two internal Raid arrays, one Raid 5, one Raid 6.

To accomplish that I utilized the optical bay to house eight 2.5 in drives to build the Raid 6 component.

I ended up going with spinning metal because while the SSD's were great at burst speed, they were somewhat erratic on throughput after the initial file write.

On balance given their capacity and cost I decided to opt for standard drives.

I'd further add that this must be a reasonably common because I talked to G-tech and Sonnet last year at Macworld looking for a two drive bus powered e-sata SSD set up and they both were planning on shipping them early last year and neither have.

I was at the FCP supermeet last night and talked to the same people a G-Tech, and they said they had encountered similar difficulties and weren't happy with the results but they were still working towards a product.

Hope this helps,

Steve

Steve nice system. There are issues to deal with you are right. One is firmware updates. The firmware would have to be solid before plugging them into a Red Raid.

Conceivable problems:

--Once plugged in there would be no way to access the individual SSD's to do any further firmware updates.

--if not erased/reset properly, (ie. resetting the drive to 1's) you would lose performance.

Eirik I wonder the same thing, given the decrease in storage prices could the Red Ram be priced lower to reflect this?
