Hopefully this thread hasn't already been started elsewhere. I thought it would be cool to collect a list of tips and gotchas for new owners in one place. Stuff like using washers to fix the loose grips, watching the battery connector holes to make sure they don't become fouled & stop making contact, etc.

I'll collect a summary in this top post from time to time, and perhaps someone will make it sticky - and/or we can post it to redhax.

mitch

p.s. - I seem to remember a tip about washers to prevent the camera base holes from getting chewed up, but I couldn't find it with search. Anyone remember that one?

General new owner tips:

http://www.reduser.net/forum/showpost.php?p=224818&postcount=2

Hold down UNDO + EXIT buttons at the same time and you will un-mount your media. This is old news, but I just discovered that you can just touch UNDO + EXIT once and you get the same results.

When shooting with lots of ND, you may get infrared color contamination - you'll need a "hot" (infrared) filter. See this thread: http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=9412&highlight=infrared

DONT's:

Never point a laser into the sensor. 1st AC's with laser range finders be careful. (See this thread: http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=16174&highlight=laser+sensor)

Scott - I don't mean to be a dick (no, seriously, I'm not), but I'm going to suggest that crossposting what is essentially an advertisement to multiple forums, and attaching it to threads for which it is offtopic could be considered bad forum etiquette. I like boxx products, in general - just saying that picking the wrong time/place could backfire for you.

Other folks - I'm surprised nobody has camera-specific tips of the sort I mentioned. I was hoping to harness the power of the masses, rather than sift through a zillion forum posts to compile the info. Links to individual posts wouldn't be bad, either. Here's one from me:

Not a great tip, but wanted to get you started.

Thanks, guys. Summary updated in first post.

digitalfx - I seem to remember something about failing to unmount the media preventing the camera from writing the profile file, but I couldn't find a reference. You don't have one, by chance?

Always un-mount the media before removing a CF card or disconnecting a drive. Also do an un-mount before you power-off the camera -- I always remove media before I power down.

When you un-mount the media, it finalizes writing any open data and it writes the camera log file. The log file is necessary for diagnosing various camera issues that may pop up.

Great Thread!
How do you make a technical check of the cam?
Suggestion: Experienced users please add a "Checklist before important shoots".
Thanks,
Marc

Before ALL shoots (a quick list):

- Visually inspect all pieces and parts, including cables and connectors.
- Build the camera (including LCD or EVF), turn it on - make sure it works.
- Remove body cap and check sensor for dust and what not.
- Put a lens up, got picture? Check back focus.
- Check all lenses to be used.
- Put batteries on chargers.
- Mount/format and unmount media (even though production will or you will on your shoot).
- Set camera settings if known, shoot camera house test footage and run it through post workflow.
- Test all AKS and support gear.
- Securely repack.
- Have RED/contact of a back up body/rental house on speed dial.
- Have a safe shoot.
