  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Optar Illumina pre-announcement@reduser.net

Master Primes and DigiPrimes are made to be very sharp when wide open. I still think they looked a little better (more contrasty) when stopped down, but nowhere near as dramatic a difference as the Super Speeds.

And yes, the lenses have been tweaked by Stuart at Focus Optics. Useable? Yes, but still noticeably softer.

Anybody out there with info on Optar Illumina S35 1.3 lenses?

question----

any sense on how product from optar illumina might compare with that from optica elite? (i'm asking on quality, not cost). how are the optics? how are the mechanicals? i realize optar illumina does not yet have 35mm stuff, but on the basis of their 16mm lenses.

thanks,
p

At $34,500 I think they missed the attractive price point by about $10,000. With new optics on the way from Red, and others it's going to be a non starter at that price point for a Russian made lens regardless of build / optical quality.

Last set of Super 16mm Optars I used was pretty ratty, so to me at least they have a bit to prove before I plunk down more than a set of Elites and $14.5k more than the Red primes.

Would love to test them out and see how they hold up....

I dunno. The glass is T1.2, that's fast any which way you spin it... Faster than master primes. If the build quality and aesthetic of the lenses is up to par then $34500 would be a bargain. If Red brought out a set of T1.2's I'd be suprised if they weren't priced similarly or higher. That extra T0.7 is a lot of work to get too.

As with the Red set the proof is in the pudding, how well they'll perform against the Cooke's and Arri's of this world will be the real test but i don't see much wrong with the pricing personally.

Faster primes. Nice. But at this moment will have to give Red the edge on delivery time.

Gregory is a neighbor of mine and I've talked to him about the lenses and he assures me that it is a very modern design with top quality glass. As paul says the proof will be in the pudding. If the optical and build quality are up to reasonable modern standards the fact that the are t1.2 means they will be an extremely good value.

what would you be expecting for ?.. might he say " very old design with bottle :poster_oops: bottom quality glass ? "

By modern design he is probably refering to the housings of the lenses being more in keeping with cooke S4's and ultra/master primes. Optar's previous lenses had an older style housing similar to Zeiss standard/supers.

No, but I have a pretty good b.s. meter and in talking to him and about them and the specifics of how they are being manufactured - I believe him. I could be wrong as I have no direct knowledge or control.
