  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Nikon Mount

So.....I'm an idiot. In my excitement, I reinstalled the Canon AL Mount back onto my Scarlet, and could not for the life of me figure out why my ZF.2 lenses weren't fitting.

Zeiss ZF.2 F-Mount lenses work 100% with this mount.

Oh Gotcha, lol. I wondering why, as I have the same set. Glad it worked out. Hopefully future firmwares will add support to more lenses.

Cheers,
Marq

Just in case somebody else might want to know, I just got mine, no Ai coupling information with the mount. Would have been nice, unfortunately RED missed an easy way to get iris meta data from all Ai lenses into the camera. On the other side, this mount is extremly well made and packed with all this stuff for the newer lenses... Glad to have this sturdy solution now, adds a lot of options, thank you RED.

Cheers

Hi guys
great discussion. Considering the nikon mount.. a few questions i was wondering someone could assist with.
1- I notice that the 1.4G lenses supported for AutoFocus... what about the 1.8G lenses... ? or will this be in future or what?
2- how does the iris control work, for AF-S lenses? can you do increments?
Thanks in advance. Cheers. Nathan

Nathan,

Just my guess, the lenses have to be profiled and added in firmware, probably a matter of time, plenty of work for RED to do. The iris control will work in increments and is done by a little motor inside the mount. I don´t own G lenses and cannot confirm how they would perform. The only lens I own that should be supported is a 85 1.4D lens, but the iris control is not working properly at the moment (unfortunately the wrong aperture is set in the lens). Not sure if this is a problem of my mount/lens combination or will be corrected in firmware, we are in beta status right now, so before complaining I´ll wait for the next build first. As the aperture can be set manually on all my lenses no problem for me. I would have really loved an AI readout though...

cool thanks Ulf.

i think that makes sense. the question i think then is which will end up being supported. id guess g-series will be on the list?

re 85 1.4d it was saying it wasn't supported... http://www.red.com/store/products/dsmc-al-nikon-mount

so can you work with not supported auto style lenses or basically you are stuck or what?

cheers!

yeah.. thats good. i wonder though about G -series and auto style lenses...
thanks man.

Nathan,

For autofocus the lenses need to have the focus motor inside the lens. Lenses without motor will not be able to get autofocus use with the DSMC System. I could think of an Iris control added to all AIS lenses. G lenses that are not supported yet, no idea. As they miss the manual iris control it depends on the lever position of the mount, that is controled be the camera, how...I would have to guess.

thanks for reply.

now im confused. can we talk about g-series? keep it simple for me.. hehehe

okay so
right now AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 G is supported, according to the store.
Same lens, except f/1.8, that is Nikkor 50MM F/1.8 G has all same specs (as in autofocus and built in iris) should be supported... in future as its technically no different save for f-stop... so no issues of mechanics are there. its only a question of profiling or firmware... right or am i missing something?

thanks man.

I just realized/discovered that the Nikon mount is here! I must be a moron as I have kept my eye on Recon but just must've been snoozing or something. I wanted to buy the Scarlet when it was offered to early adopters for less, but with no Nikon mount and all my glass Nikon, I passed (and was bummed that there was no extension of the deal for Nikon people :-(. But such is life. In any event, I hope someone here who has this mount can describe the use and if it is great, okay, etc. I still haven't gleaned from this thread how the iris is controlled (not concerned with the mechanics of the engineering, but is it a touch screen control, etc.). Also, curious to know about AF. Is it AF w/face-detection or tracking or what? Maybe I am just too stupid to find it here or on the Red site. I read everything I could find in the store..... Ready to pounce!

hi there,

I actually just shot with the 50mm 1.8G and the focus distance and iris features ARE SUPPORTED. I also used my 85mm 1.4D and the Iris and focus distance works perfectly fine...(no touch focus of course due to the lack of focusing motor in the D series.
Did you want me to record how the iris (fstop) toggle works, so you can see the increments?

I'd be more than happen to.

Cheers,
Marq

Shot some recently with the new Nikon adaptor. Some feedback - the software is a bit buggy, the punch in for focus does not work and glitches the LCD with a magenta bar. That is my biggest issue. A smaller issue is that selecting your iris is a bit random. For instance you select 5.6 and the camera gives you 5.0. In addition the iris adjusts quite slowly. Thats about it for now.
