looking at the new mattebox render, here is my only advice:

please PLEASE don't use the redrock style of eyebrow/wing attachments. those tiny screws don't hold the eyebrow securely enough, and it falls off whenever someone bumps it.

go for the older arri style great-big-lots-of-friction type, which hold on in a snowstorm.

thanks,
-J

Look closer at the render. There are 3 per eyebrow and side flap. Not 2 like RR or even MB20.

They all need a middle screw and carbon fiber is smarter still. (Hope the stages and eyebrow are carbon as well!"

I personally CANT WAIT to own this MB.

I agree that this is an issue on the Redrock mattebox... Hopefully Red won't make the same mistake.

Also, a swing-away option would be cool.

Anyway, it looks very nice and is probably very lightweight (and strong), given that it's mostly carbon fiber... And the price is pretty nice too.

Now, what about that follow focus we saw in some renderings ?...

I agree on the swing away- Switching lenses with a clip will take a little bit more time. Time that I will have just gained back from upgrading R1 to Epic.

What is the maximum OD of the lens for this puppy? Sorry if I missed it in the storm of euphoria after the announcemnet.

The swing away option just isn't important to me.

In fairness I should state that I already have a MB20 with the swing away, so I've got the full cinema rig thing handily covered.

But given the new system is targeted at modularity, there is significant advantage in having a simple light weight one or two stage clip on that would work in still or cinema mode.

The world has good options for full on matteboxes, give me the run and gun CF MB that allows me to put an ND on a slim downed rig.

There's a need that hasn't been addressed well IMHO.

I 100% AGREEE!!!! My Redrock mattebox 'wings' keeps falling off 'coz the screws just can'y hold them tight enough.

Swing Away would be awesome but still excited nonetheless. The redrock mattebox has actually been good with some shortcomings like single screw knob for side flags (its nice I see three knobs per flag on the Red MB), but this new Red Mattebox looks like a sleeper. I'm so glad I waited for a clip on mattebox for my steadicam rig.

The Mattebox we revealed TODAY will take 4x5.65 filters and you can use adapters to place 4x4 filters in there.

heh heh heh....

So, there will be more than one Mattebox, and my guess would be one is the clamp-on they showed, and the other is swing-away, possibly also for larger filters.

A lot of the Epic and Scarlet concepts seem to be moving away from needing rails for attaching accessories (although you can certainly still use them if you want) hence why I think they showed the clamp-on first.

I hope you're right ! I had missed that quote from Jarred...

OR, the other mattebox may be a smaller lighter cheaper model, to accomodate the smaller 2/3 scarlet lenses which won't need 4x5,6" filter trays...
