  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New MacBook Pro today?

Please test it out with REDCINE for us.

Also, if you know anyone with an older MB Pro, compare it against theirs in performance.

I can do that, just need a r3d file to test it with...I can compare it to my octocore mac as well.

I don't know about you, but I am VERY disappointed that the MBP's do not have a Blu-Ray Burner OR reader.

This is a TRUE bummer!

Ahh, but they make more money by updating in small increments.

Well, they probably want people to download their movies on iTunes, rather than buy Blu-Ray discs...
:greedy:

And Apple says they support Blu-Ray. Pffft.

Long live physical purchases!

Blu-Ray burners should be with the next cyclical upgrade to the pro line which will see a brand new CPU design and likely memory changes. The components for burners are still very expensive but with mass manufacturing of Blu-Ray discs (6x-7x what is available now) and players about to begin, we'll get a bigger selection of burners and (hopefully) improved disc authoring software.

If you have a Fry's local to you, they're already stocking the LG GGW-H20L burner - not only does it burn to BD-R at 6x (the fastest burner currently available) as well as dual layer (50GB!) BD-R media, but it's only $399! My hunch is that whatever Apple decides to offer whenever they finally get their act together will cost you more (and do less), so you might as well jump on it.

A word of caution: it's a SATA drive - and although there are integrated SATA ports on the Mac Pro motherboard which are available - access to them requires removing the CPU heatsink and fan assembly as well as using a right-angle SATA connector to make it fit. And even if you go through the hassle of installing it properly, there have been reports that burning BD-R through SATA is not functional at this time with OSX (though burning CD and DVD media as well as playing BD media does work). The better option is to grab a SATA to USB 2.0 external enclosure (like this one), drop the drive in, and you're good to go. Works on Mac or PC, and this way it's super simple to take it to another computer if you need to. I can vouch for this setup because it's the one I've got. :)

So currently you can make 1080p discs from your RED right on your Mac for under $400... not bad. Media is also down to around $7 for a single-layer BD-R now; somewhat expensive still for individual use, but certainly cheap if you're charging a client for HD. Don't wait around for Apple to get it right.

i've just ordered a mac book pro and because i want a high res screen i've been told it's a 7 to 10 day wait. thank god i'm not going for a glossy screen cause i'd have a 2-3 week wait.

dude it isnt a new macbook pro... it is slight different it isnt new... its like going to the car dealor ship and them giving you a different rim... they dont say its a different car they say you got different rims... APPLE IS GARBAGE!!

they do nothing but hype hype hype... like seriously make something that is good... not one computer is ever the recent up to date computer that it should be... there ram is over a year old... there is like ddr3 1500 not known of this dd2 667 crap, that is slow.

they put out a stupid white laptop and a ugly silver laptop, come on guys get some better product designers... people like black (black metal is sharp)

O and dont put out a program that doesnt work... Color doesnt work if you send a project that was edited in mutli cam mode....

they spend all there time and energy on hype for there stupid iphone that cant even send files to other electronics via blutooth... that has been out for like 3 years or more.

OWC has this one but it's only 2x. I'd check with them, they may be upgrading their line soon.

I have the internal version of this drive from OWC, but I should have went with the external. The drive tray is too thick to fit through the slot opening on my Mac Pro!

It worked fine on my G5. I guess I will just have to buy an external case to put it in. Good thing OWC sells cases too.

I won't completely disagree with you, as I think Apple has some shortcomings. But, my friends who have PCs have their own share of madness happening. If you never put a PC on the internet, then you are fine. Once you do, the madness starts.

Now, I agree Apple does make some choices that seem a bit odd based on what's available in the market. Video cards have always seemed to be behind on the Macs. Don't know why that is. Ram - well, you buy a Mac with the bare minimum and then you put in third party RAM.

But to say they are complete junk is a bit of a stretch as many professionals use them everyday. For the most part, they are reliable. A well maintained PC can be just as reliable. It's really got more to do with the user at that point. People who know what they are doing with their computer tend to have pretty smooth running machines.

Sometimes it's better to keep your opinions to yourself. Enjoy your Visita run laptop, go buy a Blackberry and a grading application from IRIDAS.

*Edit - Actually looking at your posts, you're a Mac user of a new Macbook Pro, editing in FCP and are new to the film world. I guess I shouldn't take you too seriously.

I`ve never used OSX, but if its more like Linux than Windows, the hardware used in MBPs wouldn`t be such a big issue to me, coz it would probably be more stable than most Windows Laptops. Hopefully the move by Apple to Intel chips hasn`t caused any OS problems. I`ll find out when I buy one, but I`ll be leaving it as late as possible to maximise the sterling:hardware ratio.
