  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Macbook Pro Retina, 2.7Ghz, 16gb ram impressions

Can someone please comment on the possibility of hooking up other monitors or screens via thunderbolt to gain greater screen "real estate"

What would would be the issues etc. what do you need to make it happen, is it possible with CS 6?

Like this pic apparently Avid on 15 " Retina display with thunderbolt displays.

Apologies for my ignorance this is all way over my head coming from Mac Pro land currently configured with dual screens.

I am running my production monitor out of the hdmi port and telling redcine to use it to display full screen, works great, playback of 4khd at full rez with sonnet box and redrocket

Very good news indeed regarding Retina support in redcine x pro! Can anyone confirm if mLink is x4 or x8? I am between the sonnet express pro unit and the mlink (and I am aware that one is shipping and the other is not) but regarding speed...are these units the same?

Thanks for your feedback on the set up.

Thanks for the quick response, dual screen configurations appears easier than I thought.

Leaves me sort of questioning if a Mac Pro tower is required anymore.

don't discount the heavy lifting a tower can still do. real pci express holds a lot more bandwidth. you still can't throw gpu's in thunderbolt expanders with mac os, and of course processing speed, ram capacity, etc. etc. will still all out perform a notebook. (whenever apple comes out with that new amazing tower I keep hearing about)

but it's really great that laptops are performing at these levels. having a tbolt expander has really let me be more mobile on jobs with a lot of company moves and doesn't need the horsepower of a tower. the options just help a person work so much easier.

Additional impressions.

Tried exporting both a 4k prores 444 and a 1080p 444 clip from redcine X without a rocket. This was a 35 second clip. Total time about 47 minutes for the 4K clip and a bit less- about 43?- minutes for the 1080p clip. I messed with everything from flut to sharpness, unsharp mask, alchemy, so this might have added something to the transcode. It definitely asks for a rocket if transcoding is part of your workflow!

Now, for the good news: I compared both these clips in quicktime, side by side, on this monitor. By the way, both playback smoothly! And watching the 1080p vs the 4K clip was like watching SD vs HD. No kidding. If you want to showcase a 4K piece for your clients and don't have a 4K portable projector, show it in this screen. You can immediately sell and show the added value of the extra resolution. Absolutely stunning. I took a screen grab and Its about 5mb. Its obviously a silly question but how do I post it over here?

EDIT-this autocorrect sure does some funny stuff. I think this would do great in a comedy! :)

Wow! Crazy the difference.

I have a question, how can the new Retina Macbook Pro playback a 4k mov real time but my 8 core mac pro can't do it without stuttering and skipping? I can playback fine in fcp and premiere or RCX but the 4k mov in quicktime always stutters.
My setup is:
Mac Pro 2x2.26 (8 core)
24gb ram
nvidia gtx 470
nvidia gt120
Redrocket
eSata card
all latest updates for software and OS running Lion.

It is playing back fine here. Its a 4096 x 2160. It "jumps" when I press play (first frames) but stays constant throughout the video. I need to install FCPX here to see how this performs in a "Native" 4K prores editing environment. Haven't tried Premiere yet. This test was in QT playback. Maybe its the internal ssd's performance that allows faster read of the file? This is Prores 444 4K...

Yeah sorry I was referring to Quicktime Playback.

More info:

Final Cut pro X its still the same software as before with many things i don't like, but it cuts 4K Prores 444 natively, realtime. Threw some random effects like bleach bypass and runs like a champ. Very, very impressive. And it takes advantage of this display... Just gorgeous. Adobe, please do the same!

HI Frederick,

did you achieve the 9k resolution with the Compound Clip - Open in Timeline , etc. work-around?
Because I know FCP X doesn't have custom resolutions, but there is a work-around for it (that is detailed on Creative Cow, and I used it successfully to have a 11K timeline once), and just wondered if you used the same method or there was something else?

So you got 4x 4.5k Prores playing back? Nuts.

I created the custom frame size through the motion export and then compound clip method. Yes playback works in FCP X. Exported 10 sec prores clip is 2.2 gb. Doesn't playback so well in quicktime though.
