  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Mac Pros... which video card?

funciona o no?

funciona o no?

The ATI 2600 video card doesn´t work with REDCINE in bootcamp. I will try on OS now.

Hey Macgregor, am I right to assume that FCS2 will be just fine with the ATI 2600? In other words, I don't have to get any of those other cards if I'm just running FCS2 (no redcine, nothing else), right?

Lucky boy, even if you don't get the best results right now I'm pretty sure that the in the next few weeks things will improve as Graeme and Apple work on the GPU handling.

Did you install the new graphic upgrade from Leopard 10.5.2 that came out yesterday?

Our 8 Core 3 GHz, 8GB RAM, 1900XT machines took 26 times realtime to do that.

No, I didn't have time to install the new update. Didn't know there was one anyway. Thanks for letting me know.

Yeah, so Red Alert works, but that doesn't use your video processor, just the CPU. So, for God's sake, man, give Red Cine a try!

How would I have got a 1080DPX without RedCine?

I meant to do the same test as I did on the new machine.
Or were you looking for: it takes 26 seconds to render 1 second's worth of footage?

By the way, I can't remember if these tests were exactly the same. I think they were though. Just don't go shopping based on them.

Yeah, but down to 17sec/1sec with the 8800 machine. It came with QT 7.4 installed :(

My mistake. I thought DPX and TIFF output were the sole province of Red Alert!

So is this the green light for ordering my MacPro 2.8 Octo with an nVidia 8800GT or am I missing something here?

Hmm. I didn't check if the DPXs actually worked. I just installed the OS, then RedCine and did the test. I will try the driver update and another 6 Gigs of RAM tomorrow. I have to do a big render so I should get better results then.

I'm going to try doing it from FCP XML. Do I still need to transcode FCP XML to RED XML?

The DPXs seem to work fine on the 8800GT.

Just tried the Leopard GFX update. On the 4K to ProRes I was doing at the time, it was 3 times as fast after the update using the 8800

So what was the transcode ratio on that, out of interest? Any chance you could be a total star and try the same (17:1) DPX transcode with the GFX update as well and see if that gets a 3x boost too - 6:1 would be fantastic!

Looks like the 8800 is the way to go - great news if so, we really need to upgrade our edit stations here, and this is the info we're waiting on.

Cheers for all your effort to enlighten us Irri, much appreciated...

It seems that might have just been with prores. The 4K2:1 to 1080 DPX sinc are taking 4 mins for a 15 sec commercial. Sorry no time today to test specific things. I have another 4 commercials to spit out. Maybe have time tomorrow

No worries Irri, that's completely understandable. Thanks for all your time so far, very useful info...

Maybe the nVidia driver issues have been fixed?

Wasn't the main issue that nVidia cards were 3 times slower in under MacOS X?

Or is it now 3 times faster ONLY with ProRes?

Looks like we better wait to hear Rob Lohman's report on his soon-to-arrive MacPro.

Sorry I can't help more. It was basically install RedCine and start rendering for the grade tomorrow.

All I can say is that each of these 15 second clips take about 4 mins to render.
The are RedCine going from 4K2:1 to 1080 DPX, Sinc compression, detail medium, sharpen 50, NR off.

8 core 2.8
2 Gigs ram
8800GT
Latest Leopard update
