  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Mac Pros are here!

After talking with two of Apple reps I was told that the ATI cards are just minimum configuration and not nearly in off to work with FCP, SHAKE, MOTION and COLOR, so the NVIDIA 8800 were highly recommended.

So the configuration I'm setting for is this one below, as I will try to wait as long as I can to pull the trigger, hoping to ear from Rob.

Ciao,

Ketch, that is quite a setup!

I don't think you need both AppleCare plans. The one that goes with your Mac Pro should also cover the 30" Display.

Or you could mail it to me, I love Mighty mouse.

Really? You're weird. :bleh:

Heh, maybe I will mail you when the system is on the way. I don't care for the mighty mouse. The left and right buttons never work 100% for me and the side squeeze button causes me more grief than I care to think about. I know I'm not alone, but most everyone I know that's on a Mac can't stand the MM. The few people I know that tend to like it, don't run apps that need 3 or more buttons. I will admit that I do like the scroll ball button vs. the wheel on most any other mouse.

That's quite a system there, Ketch!

If you're going to get 4 HDDs, then you will definitely want the RAID card even though it's $800. I would set up the first drive as your primary / application drive -- keep a backup image of that drive just in case. Like maybe on a firewire 800 drive or keep your software handy in case you need to re-build it if it crashes. Then do a RAID 5 array with the remaining 3 drives. That would be my approach if you were trying to keep all your storage in one system.

Also, I know you're concerned about components being incompatible. So I can understand buying the RAM from Apple. Right now there doesn't appear to be any option for the new Mac Pro anyway. None of the third party vendors have the proper RAM yet. As for hard drives, I would still personally buy them elsewhere. Simple, get the same ones that Apple uses. They tend to mostly use Hitachi and Seagate, but it doesn't matter. I'd order one single 750GB or 1TB drive in the system and then order 3 of the same drives from somewhere else to build your RAID out of. It could easily save you $600 or more and would only take you 10 minutes or so to install them. Either way, you're going to have to set up your RAID once you get your system.

Well, Jeff I think that I'll likely call some one over for dinner and help out setting up as I have also to hung a 50" flat panel HD tv above the 3 monitor editing station.

Also when comes to truly configuring the system best and optimal workflow I'm not up to the task yet, so here I will also depend on some one with more experience then my self.

I will probably hire some one for the day to help set up the system, including installation of specific software and catting corner on some applications and integration of my desired workflow with FCS 2, REDCINE, SHAKE, MOTION and COLOR.

At the end I hope again that Rob tests will give a better idea on the system best configuration as far as Hard ware, I believe that the guy at Apple is trying to over sale a little, especially with the amount of memory, we must find out what is the actual amount of memory of which our workflow with RED and FCP will utilized to the fullest, no under buy but no over buy.

I recommend ZipZoomFly.com

Last week I got three Seagate Barracuda ES 750GB SATA drives for $689.86.

Three 750GB SATA drives from Apple would have been $1,200.

I'm waiting to see what happens at MacWorld and for Rob's tests before I buy, but my camera probably isn't due until feb or march and I can make do for a few more weeks with the ol' G5, my macbook pro and a few PCs.

I do think the guy at Apple is trying to over-sell you on the RAM. You most likely won't need all 16GB. But I wouldn't recommend less than 8GB...

Yeah, ZipZoomFly is good. I like NewEgg and MWave too.

I don't know how I missed the OWC RAM you posted about before. I'm definitely interested to see how it works out.

Grrr....

Anyone else notice that the estimated ship time goes from 7-10 business days to 3-5 weeks if you select either of the nVidia graphics card options?

OWC has RAM for the new Mac Pro's.

It looks like now they raised their price ($50) for the modules that I ordered.

Are you sure that's what you bought? I thought you got these: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other World Computing/64FB2MPK08GB/

Personally, I've only ever seen one cheap, third party ram chip go bad. Even if I have a chip go bad in a year, it would still be cheaper to replace that one chip then buy the "namebrand" memory. Of course, there's the heatsink to consider also, but that's why I am waiting probably a month before I buy 8 GB's.

I didn't realize it, but OWC has 4GB modules too. :)

Yes, that is why I went with the stock ATI. I also wanted to wait for Rob's tests.

Are you sure that's what you bought? I thought you got these:

No. I went with the 2x2GB modules but wanted to test them before I got another two of the same. 4 modules total or 8 modules total of the same RAM is best, and I can't afford more then 8GB at the moment.

Here is the Mac Pro memory configuration I am going for:

I CAN not under..stand anything it look's Helogrephic :ranting2: (first typing letters belongs to old egyptians).to me will anyone simplify it please
