  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Mac Pro rumors

Threads with titles like this always get me.
 
As much as I'd like Apple to bring the new Mac Pros in with a vengeance it is just not in the cards. They lost their leader, the no nonsense innovator of what Apple has become. He made that company sharp, he held them accountable and expected the best. His death was our loss as users of professional workstations. That's gotta set a company back.

I am not giving up OS X, it's a much more creative and simple interface for my work. There are plenty of brilliant creative minds still at Apple, but in the interim, the settling period that Apple currently resides in, it might be time to lower our expectations for a new mac pro tower and the 1-2 year future of the company.

Buying used with a rocket card and maxed ram / video card might be the ticket for now.

BTW does anyone know what the fastest/best graphics card for the Mac Pro is?

It will be more compact, and perhaps have less PCI-e capability. I could see them putting more emphasis on Thunderbolt for expansion. It will be a high performance machine with fast processors and high capacity for RAM. There will be some new cooling approach too. Graphics capabilities expanded as well.

I could also see them going the route of HP Z1 configurable all-in-one system with a 4k retina display.

I like the modular idea and hope it's something like that and would potentially allow just upgrading of the CPU/brain when fast processors come out. Apple is doing away with optical drives, so it doesn't make sense for them to have a Mac Pro in it's current form factor. Something along the lines of the Mac Mini Server I think could be expected. 3 or 4 Thunderbolt ports and you could have add-on interface cards, Red Rocket, graphics, hard drives, etc, etc, without as much loss of performance. Sure, not as fast as a Mac Pro tower right now, but not bad. Who knows. It's all just speculation. No one here know what Apple is doing. It will be interesting regardless.
 
Couldn't we at least have a mole from REDUSER in Apple?

I am not so sure - Steve Jobs' philosophy was that the company should have complete control over your device. This goes all the way back to the very first PCs, Wozniak kept pushing for "configurable and upgradeable computers" but Jobs was stood his ground - Apple would choose what hardware and software your machine will use, not the consumer. Apple will give you what they think you want, but not necessarily what you really need, whether you realize it or not. This model has significant benefits, but also showstopping drawbacks. Looking at the entirety of Apple's range, Mac Pro is the only product which is truly upgradeable beyond the basics, albeit even then far less so than competing solutions. Mac Pro's ancestry traces back to Power Mac, which came into being while Jobs was at NeXT. It has been argued previously that had Jobs not left Apple, there would be no Mac Pro today. Everything that Jobs has presented has always been a walled garden solution. Obviously, things have slowly opened up to an extent, particularly with the X86 transition.

If anything, with Jobs no longer around Apple could possibly break out of the mold and offer a truly powerful platform. I doubt that would happen, but I am certain a new Mac Pro is coming. Just don't know when.

In the meantime, if you are not emotionally attached to your computer and simply want to get work done, it is best to look elsewhere. It will save you hundreds of hours, thousands of dollars and lead to a better film.
 
Always glad to hear an interesting perspective on the same situation. The Mac Pro department needs leadership, someone creative, someone that can give the pro users what they need. Even though Mac Pros are towers, I've always felt they lack in available power can PCIe cards. Of course I can go to the PC world anytime, OS X makes me more efficient at what I do on daily tasks. Most importantly, I am comfortable with OS X and the work get's done.
 
And the 23rd comes and goes without a new Mac. Another rumor goes the dust.

BTW, I saw a few of the apple guys wondering the RED booth. They looked damn impressed and humbled by what the saw just before sneaking into the theatre from the back door.

Apple is announcing earnings today and they usually don't let announcements fight over the spotlight.

Yep got sucked into it too ;) Sure beats the Chicken Little mentality I'm used to reading everyday (other sites) :P

The way things are going I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out to be an "iMac Pro" with 32" Quad HD screen and a bunch of Thunderbolts.
 
Don't you mean a 32" touchscreen? :drool:

It's an iPad Pro, not an iMac those are 27" and 24", the MacBook Pro version remains 17", the MacBook Air version is 15" and the iPad remains the same. It's convergence. The future is really all iPad. (Except the new TV, that is remote controlled by the iPad. ;-)

I think thermodynamics is the rub on that one. Does anyone know if OLEDs are cooler running? Maybe the answer is just a good telescopic mounting bracket, so you don't have to put that monster in your lap... Oh and a little sunscreen on your face. ;-)
