I dub it "The Death Starrr!"

Not sure I see having a bigger box on my desk as any different than being able to arrange a few smaller ones however I want them.

And, of course I already see "concept" versions dressed as a trash can..
Is the hollow center for cooling?

Yes !
Check here : http://www.apple.com/mac-pro/

The Graphics Cards however... I am worried ! Will it have a proprietary design like it seems or is it just for today's demo purposes ? (since now we have unified Nvidia drivers and so on for Mac Pro, it would be a BAAAAD idea !)

Looks like bespoke daughter cards, one for each GPU. At least it's not a totally monolithic solution so we could see nVidia cards down the line.

Personally I'd sooner see companies agree on a more unified instruction set so GPGPU utilisation becomes hardware agnostic.

So a quick summary
- 2 6 core xeon. A bit disappointing that it doesn't have 8 core Xeons.
- 4 memory slots. Are these Apples own? They look a bit strange so it may be. I wonder what the maximum limit is.
- A bit concerning that it has only ATI. I really like CUDA since more programs support it.
- The graphic card support 4k, which is cool. The 6GB cards are really expensive, around $2000-3000 that ATI currently has. 2 of those would be very expensive.
- nice with fast ssd but not so important for us really.
- Interesting that it's so portable. You should be able to take it as hand luggage on an airplane. That is one of the big benefits. You should be able to bring a vfx/grading station that is really powerful to work in different places over the world.

Best
/Andreas

For my purposes, this new design is pretty much perfect.

Please not another Mac Pro thread. Where are the moderators when you really need them... :reddevil:

I don't see any other Mac Pro posts on the first few pages of this sub-board...

Perfect! This will drive the costs of expansion chassis down, hopefully the Dragon Red Rocket will work perfect over Thunderbolt 2, and SDI will be replaced by Thunderbolt/DisplayPort and internal colour management. Go Apple!

There are two in the Post Production Hardware section, and 3 in the Workflow section (two of which are specifically in the Apple forum, the other is just in the general Workflow forum).

Moving a Medusa is a nightmare. It's like a mobile laptop setup with external everything arrayed on the table. I would rather have one oversized box than a knot of tangled accessories everywhere.
