  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New "Mac Mini"

Bugger. We *just* bought the Server model of the Mac Mini. Ah well, can't complain, didn't really need HDMI or a great GPU. This would make a great rushes viewing device, though.

is it possible to network a few mac mini and use as render farm for Da Vinci projects?

Contact whoever you bought it from and see what their return policy is.

OS X Server has something called XGrid, which is a system to distribute compute jobs accross the network, so if you have a OS X Server box you can set it up act as a grid computer. If Da Vinci works with XGrid I dont know.

The Apple Store has now been reopened. Besides the iPhone 4, a new "MacMini" is now available... http://www.apple.com/macmini/

Not that it's a professional's tool, but it does show they are doing more than just an iPhone.

Apple needs to continue building a platform for professional developers and media content creators to feed its consume delivery services. Mac Mini's esp. the server version are great little pro tools. Nice and simple testing boxes, and they make good little hosting boxes.

Mac Mini's for render nodes makes little sense, IMO. The price / performance just isn't there. You would get more power for your pennies by getting a barebones Mac Pro 8-core and stacking it with 2GB+ per CPU.

On the other hand, if you use the minis as low-cost workstations on various office desks and then harness them as render CPUs during the night and on weekends when they're not being used, that can be a good thing. :)

its not only a render server and webserver
it is the best small ( mini haloooo ) computer workhore on your desk!
funny enough that most people cant get the difference of the sentense:
"size matters"

size matters always - don't try to size up gravity:)
