  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Mac Mini for editing

1, it lacks battery power/mobility. if that matters to you, then not a good option.
2, buy the upgrades third party from macsales.com or crucial, or newegg, or anywhere outside of apple. show up at an apple store with parts in hand an demand free installation on your new machine. make sure the parts match ahead of time obviously when you buy them third party.
3, consider springing for a promise r6, more storage space, more drives. using 1 drive with thunderbolt or usb3 is counter productive. the single drive will be the bottle neck, not the port. so you need more drives to get faster read writes off that port. r6 is good, but even a drobo 5d would be better then getting a 1tb drive. not to mention that shooting red 1 tb doesn't last particularity long and you have no Raid redundancy at all on that drive. so the best system would be the R6, but even the 5D would be better then using a single drive is my point.
4. the system is inexpensive, but without pci slots natively. also when you say cuda, is there any thunderbolt external pci enclosures that currently support osx with external GPUs? last time i looked into that the answer was no... inter-polarity issues and such, plus thunderbolt is kind of slow as far as external GPU performance goes i hear bandwidth wise. i heard for a red rocket it works okay...which might be another way to do it.

but in conclusion be careful of your external GPU theory. last time i looked into doing the same set up, it wasn't a viable option yet. without being able to hook up a decent gpu or red rocket not sure how great that system will ever be (relative to a decked out xeon i mean)

Best to just hold out for next year's MacPro. There should be a 4K-friendly ecosystem happening at that point.

When I looked into it recently, external GPU was not an option via thunderbolt from a mac, so unless things change radically I personally will be moving forward by ensuring I Periodically update my mac pros internal GPU.

thanks Brian, Sam,
only red rocket? :-(( , i have Nvidia quadro 4000 new!!
my problem is that I have a mac pro 2008.
8core 16gb ram 800, too slow for timeline 4k and video 5k.
I have all sw for mac osx, I will not buy anything for windows.
I want good economic Computers waiting for the new mac pro (if they do).
I do not need portable, I would like at least 2 levels 4k 1/4 rez play fluid.

a quad core mini with ssd, 16gbs of ram and a promise r6 will do a pretty good job for you, but no cuda! that is all we're saying, you can run a red rocket in that pci enclosure, if you got one. just no GPU's running OSX externally at this moment, due to "interpolarity" issues according to any enclosure manufacturer I have seen interviewed. this has been discussed before on RU. windows machines can run them external tho, but only at 4x pci bandwidth, thunderbolt doesn't provide faster speeds then that, hence it sucks sort of anyway...

personally i want to get that same set up myself mac mini wise/r6/red rocket, but i might go the mobile route and grab a non retina mbp instead...i like the legacy ports and power

unless you have a rocket via thunderbolt, the mini, air and even mbp 13 are out because of gpu.....imac is the MUCH better solution and probably the better deal as well (monitor, kb, mouse,...)
