Is there anyone out there interested in making a 15mm studio bracket for the Red Rock Micro matte box that can clear a dovetail plate? I don't like flipping the dovetail around and mounting the camera from the front. I would pay some money for this and I believe others would too.

Michael,

Admittedly, I'm not very familiar with this particular Matte Box, but isn't there a way to remove the Studio Bracket from the bottom of the Matte Box and just use the LightWeight 15 standard instead? I realize that if your using a Studio FF that this wouldn't work, but if you are using Red Rock's FF than that can convert into 15mm LW as well.

If you need a 15mm LW setup for the RED, you can check out Element's Ultralite 15 here:

We're out of stock of them for the moment, but we should have more within a week or so.

Thanks for the info Steve. I already have most of the products that you guys produce and I love them. I really wanted to stay with 15mm studio, but maybe you're right. I really liked the Underhal setup for mini 15 for verite style shooting as well as a lightweight steadicam option. the only issue with that was the screw on Aaton rods had a tendency to want to come unscrewed with a wireless FF. Your price point is pretty nice as well. Are there any issues with follow focuses not being able to reach on a Superspeed or standard speed lens (ie. bumping into your lightweight bracket)?

None that I am aware of Michael. The front face of the Ultralite is nearly 1/2" behind the front face of the Lens Locking Ring, FWIW...

I'm making a different studio 15 RR compatible plate that clears dovetails. When do you need? I'm 3 or 4 weeks away yet.

I'd love a 19mm bracket that clears a dovetail as well - same problem there...

Oh well!...

Dom.

And you can add my name to those interested in this product too!

I can make it 19 too.

Again, these are in process. If you come up with other options I won't be offended (in other words I don't want a 'waiting for Paul to finish my bracket' thread). That said, I'm making these for myself already so I'll make up more.

I'm very interested as well in a 19mm version. That's the thing I hate most with the RR mattebox...
It's especially irritating when you need to switch quickly to Element Technicas Mantis handheld rig...

Hi Paul,

I'm interested in you support as well. Also living in Vancouver maybe I could check out the proto-type in a couple of months?

Cheers, Vince

Why not just get the mattebox in lightweight 15mm support and then use an adapter like ours? This should clear dovetails just fine.

Because RR shouldn't have made a mistake like that in the first place, and I think the people that want this bracket already own one.

I got rid of my RR, but when I had it that aspect was a total pain.

Not to badmouth RedRock, because their products have a LOT going for them for their price point, but the 15mm lightweight setup from Redrock has its own problems. The design on the filter trays is just a little too big, and with the lightweight setup, your rods don't clear the bottom of the mattebox. Big problem. This means that unless all your lenses are roughly the same length, and you cut your rods accordingly, you've got very little in and out play.

So 15 lightweight and your rods hit the mattebox....
15 studio and your bracket hits the dovetail....

Our solution: we've got and o'connor 1030, so our dovetail slides right in - so we can balance the camera between the dovetail and the tripod. We just leave the camera parked at the front of the dovetail.

Sure thing Vince,

Hopefully in a lot less than 'couple' months.

That's exactly it. The rods bump into the Matte Box instead of clearing underneath. I also have a 1030 but that doesn't make it any easier. It's a bitch to slide the dovetail out of the head with the camera on and you still have to get rid of it for handheld.

Paul, I would love one too, if that's possible. 19mm that is.

Boy no kidding -- I had to use the mattebox the day I first got it... what a major drag cutting down those new ET rods so the RR would fit!

I don't want to rub anyone's nose in it, but these little design considerations are part of what you get out of buying a product from an experienced manufacturer such as ARRI.
