Well today I have had the pleasure to meet with Gregory Mirand to look at the New lomo T1.3 primes.
They are beautifully machined and look amazing. We tested the 35mm
Lomo against a Cooke S4 @ a 2stop and they are very hard to tell apart.
cookes were maybe a little brighter/ sharper but these lenses are the real deal. They looked great projected and were sharp into the corners, they have 95mm fronts, very nice.Definitly German(Schott) Engineering
Greg said they will have 200 sets (18,25,35,50,85) available by mid August
for between 25-30,000$
Any questions contact Gregory at gmirand@gmail.com

With what appears to be a rash of cine lens competition about to burst onto the international scene, and with Red Pro lenses setting the bar at $20K for a set of 5 (admittedly no wide angle included) and rumours of even better pricing from others...one would think the Lomos would come in at a lower altitude. I do recognize that they are very fast...but are they still made in Russia? I'm just sayin'...

Ken, I'm told they are made from German glass in Germany. And with repect to a rash of lenses you're right soyou have to look at at a the companies with history. These are not the Optar Ilumina 16mm superspeeds with Russian glass. they are high end 35mm lenses. they were beefy and looked ultra sharp at 1.3 i will post a tiff later when i get home of the 35mmLomo vs the 35mmS4( at a 2 of course)
I thought for the price they were very reasonable compared to the beat up sets of superspeeds for 20,000$ i've seen around

What does LOMO have to do with German lenses? Also, Lomo doesn't make lenses. Are you talking about Elite? that would make a lot more sense, except they are russian.

I wish I could find a beat up set of superspeeds for $20K. :sarcasm: Most beat up sets I've seen are still hovering the the $45-$60K range for 5 lenses.

More competition is good, it will be interesting to see how everything shakes out over the next year or so.

This definitely seems to be the year of the glass :-)

May they all race each other to the bottom of thin margins. May someone with deep pockets decide to sell below margins to gain market share. May we the customers benefit. Amen.

I guess they are introducing a whole new line made with better german glass. drop Gregory an E-mail at gmirand@gmail.com better to hear it from the source.
I'm with you Jeff more competition is good and another couple of hundred sets cant hurt with all these cameras flying around, 45-60,000 for a set primes...DAMN glad i'm out of that market!

After a quick call to my Camera Guru friend Greg Browning from camera group I got the skinny on Lomo. The Lomo factory in Russia is a sub-contractor for zeiss so hence the connection. Hopefully Greg will chime in soon with a little more info

So they just switched the brand?

Optar Illumina from Luma Tech is now, Lomo from Luma?

$35k for a set of lenses comparable to Cooke S4s but with more speed? That's a lot of money? You should be checking the prices of Cookes and Ultra/Master Primes.

Is bargain. (that's me speaking Russian).

Now you can still get a set of Elites from Russia for about 6k a piece. A standard set of 5 will cost around 30k.

I'm sure we'll know more about the RED primes in a couple weeks.

Do they have a shop in Sydney where I could come and check them out on a projector against MPs or have them serviced? :sarcasm:

these lenses dont cover a 32 mm image circle asfaik...they will get really cheap after epic and scarlet is out

Formats and format coverage

Formats and format coverage

LOMO in St. Petersberg have only recently made an exact study of image circle for each of the new Illumina S35 lenses. We will publish this data very soon. The known fact is that the lenses offer more generous coverage for the S35/full film aperture format than the traditional Arri/Zeiss super speeds up through the Mk-III version. The speed and "look" of these lenses will be a unique offering in the market. Come to our Hilton "trunk show" in Suite 510-KG to see some of them (35mm, 50mm, 85mm) during NAB.

The future market/application of 5K digital images is not clear. New sensor architecture and other factors may make pixel counts/lines-of resolution as they are now calculated for Bayer-mosic pattern sensors obsolete. Or at least different.

Larger image formats mean less depth of field, more focus splits and more light used to obtain deeper stops in order to preserve depth of field, esp. in interior sets. More care must also be taken with costumes, makeup and art-direction. It's tough to fudge the details when everything shows.

I think a lot of people using future RED products will be scaling their imagers to less than 5K/6K in order to widen their choices of usable optics, stretch depth of field and limit the need for more lighting. Clients will also have a say in this. Has there been a discussion of file sizes, drive capcity and render times for the brave new world of 5K ? What are Apple and their FCP suite of products doing to prepare ?

Good solid optical products will make their own place in the stable of options available to enterprising filmmakers.
