  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New lightweight rod support bracket

When I see accessories like this makes me wonder just how many screws we are allowed to change from the camera body before the warranty is voided?

Doug, what thread size are you using to attach the rods to the bracket? Aaton standard is 3/8"x16, which is of course the same as the tripod mounting bolt, so it is a nice universal sizing. Also, and it was hard to see but I think your rods had this -- the end of the rods just before the threaded bolt section should be cut flat on two parallel sides (just like Aaton) so that a small wrench can be used to really tighten them into the socket. This is important when mounting motors as they only clamp to a single rod and have a nasty tendency to unscrew the rods when hitting resistance from the lens. The need for a wrench is also important after the AC mounts the rods in the warm truck and then we go out into the cold to shoot all day. Those suckers might as well be welded on if you don't have a wrench handy at wrap.

Doug,

I really like this little helper. I had the leight-weight rods on my Arri SR and loved them for docs.

It will be the perfect rod setup for the Red when using S16 zooms or other leight-weight lenses such as Angenieux 15-40, etc...

I'm seriously interested. Now the big question: How can I purchase?

Kind Regards,

Hans

Hoping to have this ready to ship in 3-4 weeks if it meets approval. I've been using mine for a while and I really like it. If you have less equipment mounted to the underside of your RED then it sits lower on your shoulder for better balance, and reduces rig weight overall.

Douglas, I really want one of these, please keep us posted and I look forward to your prices.

Thanks,

Andrew

he said that he is sending one to Jarred for the nod...

I think this set-up plus the new mattebox and FF from Arri could be the dream lightweight set-up. Any ideas on price yet, Doug?

Almost finalized. Should have them to ship in about three weeks, lovely black anodized, with 7.5 inch rods, and also 2.5 inch extension rods. Approval looks good so far.

Can't wait... if/when all is cool with Jarred/Red!

This is great news Douglas, can we get on a list? Or pay as soon as prices are available to streamline the process on your end? Sorry to be so eager, but I could really use this for the majority of my work. I am so with Meryem on this being the central part of a "the dream lightweight set-up". Very simple, very efficient.

Thank you for doing this and for the record I think Ms. Wiig is a comedic genius. :)

No advance list - I'll just get them out as soon as possible pending approval.

Oh yeah, Wiig is just astonishing, I agree.

I think it will cost $295 with two 7.5 inch 15mm rods, and be shipping in about three weeks, maybe four, pending approval. Also will have 2.5mm rod extensions as well.
