  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Leica S2 to be launched in October 09

Die hard or not but Leica glass is one of the best in its class.
Also I had here already before very critic point of view of what Leica was doing in the last years especially in the connection to the "never happened" Leica cine glass.
I totally agree the lenses for the M-Series are usually very great. And it would have been nice indeed to see some ciné lenses rather than those S2 ones. And btw. I also buy the LFI magazine sometimes, I like the image of Leica but they don't offer anything I would buy - alas.

My primary trade is stills photographer

I have not even read about the Leica

Stills gear lust ended with the D3

When I spent out on a Hassy and 22mp $20k four years ago it was a radical machine

no other digital camera could match film (most digital files were being rejected by magazines) - the cost was offset in months in film/processing/workflow savings

Now that cost offset can be done by nikon or canon for 1/4 the price

I love a big sensor but not that much (and still have the bigger sensor hassy)

I will absolutely keep my money in the bank waiting for the first DSLR with a 25/24p decent codec/RAW/XLRs movie camera under $10k with a chip at least S35 size for movie and FF35 for stills

Leica are one of the most respected optical designers in the world and its in everyones interest that they continue to prosper, admittedly the S2 system is a gamble but as even basic DSLRs now have high image quality exclusivity is what Leica is about and that means going up the scale when they went down the scale they ran into huge problems.
Secondly anyone writing off Canon are badly mistaken it is a completely vertically integrated company making its own sensors, camera & lenses and with over 50 lenses in its arsenal not many other companies can come close.
Thirdly sensor size is not the only parameter to consider its just as important to consider the colour space conversion i.e. the software that actually gives you the image from that raw data and again this is a complete science in itself as most people in the know can attest to.
The DSMC will have a lot of competition and in my book thats good for everyone it keeps innovation going and prices down

I'm going to Leica event at October 9 in Vienna and then tell you more about S2...

Till then have a look at the picture below from the last Leica presentation:

LeicaS2_RED1.jpg

One amazing duo: RED One with Leica Noctilux-M 50mm f/0.95 and Leica S2.

Stay tuned...

Any one know what the flange to sensor distance and the mount apature on the S2 ?

There is a Leica Event expected on 9 September, rumoured to be for the M9 although there is some talk of other product announcements. Most of the rumours seem to expect an additional camera model, but some are hinting that 'other products' refers to Leica cinema lenses.
