  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New lcd monitor from smallhd

Now, I have not setup my camera, and other than running thru the menus, can not make any comments on the monitor or image quality. But others have said they were happy, especially @ the price point they come in at.

I was thinking on one issue I was planning for a field monitor-director monitor
I am planning to use a computer lcd screen now using a hdmi to dvi cable
is this camera has 2 hdmi ports because I cant afford a hd sdi monitor can you suggest something
also how will you set up this dp1 on red camera
 
I plan on using my Dell 2408 for the director's monitor for the interview shoot we have coming up. As for the SmallHD, I bought a Zacuto arm from Abel to attach to the 19mm rods for my shooting monitor.

This is the one I bought:

I need to do more research as I seem to recall you can only use 1 output at a time on the R1. I could be and probably am completely wrong. Perhaps you can only use the Red EVF or LCD and not the other outputs. Again, i need to read more beofre making this statement as fact.

I haven't even hooked the SmallHD up yet to the camera. I have to get some motion graphics out for the director before I finish assembling my camera:(

Make sure your Dell 2408 works. I have the Dell 2407 didn't work. There is a thread here...I forgot where...list all the HDMI monitors that work with R1.

Just letting you know the scoop.
 
That list has probably changed since B20 came out. My 17" Hanns-G worked great with the earlier builds, but won't work with 20.

Hi I have checked the Zacuto arm Its little expensive can you suggest me a liitle cheaper option
Also have you worked out that Dell monitor and `small Hd screens work together
 
I just got the matte screen protector they now sell with the small HD lcd and it really does help with glare.
 
My Dell 2408's don't work!!! I am really bummed because it's great for the money. Is there a list of functioning monitors??? Save me the trip to BB with my Red to test monitors.

I wanted to just use this as the sole monitor but have twice had to pull out a red LCD to cover these issues, and had one person tell me they will not use it until the power issue is solved.
If I was to buy this again knowing what i know now the 12 v into red power cable is the deal breaker. once that is done this will be a great unit in terms of its power usage.

second the overscan. I got the numbers to input from a SmallHD rep but only half of the needed info showed up. Ive emailed dale here and at small HD and have yet to hear back on that. I found this strange as when I asked the first time he was prompt in getting back to me, but once we have those number or if some else does please post and i will do that if i get those numbers first.
what this means is that with the correct over scan numbers you can see all red camera data including histro, and other info.
better yet would be a tutorial on a red camera set up on their site as I'm sure red users are going to be a large customer base once these issues have been addressed.
Lastly, let me say i like the monitor but can't recommend it until these are addressed. Once these issues are addressed i would give a full endorsement.

Hey , did smallhd contact you about this overscan issue. I am having the same problem. I only see half of the screen information and cant see the rest on the LCD even after applying the settings recommended by smallhd. Please post here if you guys have figured out how to make the whole info show up on screen.

Sorry, we do not have easy access to a Red. However, we are in the process of contacting our Red Users to get the specific setting on the Red to produce the optimal image. The following provides the DP1 settings.

One of our users also figured out how to power the DP1 directly from the optional Battery Plate.

Unfortunately we had a bad batch of batteries from our suppliers. These issues have been worked out and we have replaced them at no charge. Please let us know if this is still an issue.

BTW: It is possible to power the DP1 from the Red Battery Plate.

We recently wrapped production on a feature using smallhd monitor as our only monitoring source. It worked extremely well. Very sharp and responsive. Great stuff for our demands.
