  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Kona card details

Awesome....

Now I have to decide between this and the DeckLink Extreme3D. I want the new AJA, but I don't know how soon, or even if, DaVinci Resolve will support it. Hmmmm.....

honestly, the benefits of a kona over the decklink, is mainly the capture and deck control. Those two aspects of the Kona are so rock solid compared to the decklink. But as for I/O playback, and reference, the decklink has the edge on price, because it it does playback and signal reference just fine. For grading it works great, and I don't see the point of the Kona unless you are doing a lot of capturing, and deck control with it, also needing a lot of cross/up/down conversion.

I have almost the same features with Kona 3
and AJA hd-Sdi to HDMI 1.3a converter (or the next Hi5-3D).

I mostly agree, Tom. But have had issues with color consistency out of Decklink cards in the past. I know I'm not alone on that and I'm still curious how the new DL Extreme 3D handles. I'm not worried about it since it's currently the flagship/recommended card for Resolve.

My main reasons for wanting the new AJA over the DeckLink Extreme 3D card are the better cross conversion and it has packed-frame stereo support over HDMI 1.4.

The new Kona 3G offers that stereo support along with HDMI, native R3D playback at 2K, and a few other goodies over the Kona 3.

Well going by that, if there are color inconsistencies, how the hell can a high end grading/finishing software like Da Vinci Resolve be taken seriously when it's primary I/O board is flawed in such a serious way? BM bought da vinci, which is why I see why it has to use BM cards, and i can see it STAYING on bm cards. So the what's happening are one of these...

A. the old decklinks were garbage and the new ones are good to go, know worries, best deal in town.

B. the new ones are still flawed, Da Vinci will be inherently flawed.

This doesn't sit well with me if it's option B.

Every single time I decide to give Blackmagic another chance - I'm greatly dissapointed.

I'm very curious to see how well Resolve performs.

But hardware from Blackmagic ... good luck with that.

Running a BM now out of home, with the hdp2 and dreamcolor. Had to go for cost effective. It's great for what I need it for, but I've personally had bad experiences with BM myself when it comes to capture and laying off to tape. For a playback and HD reference card though, it's working very well, even more stable than the previous model. Glitchy with 720p/23.98 sources though, but that's kind of expected. Luckily everything I get is 1080 or above these days. So far so good.

You guys have got me extra paranoid now though...

Exactly my dilemma as well Jeff.

I've been using an IOHD for output to save a slot, but it has significant limitations is scaling "non-standard" image sizes. This means that it can't for example playback scaled 4K files (e.g. 4k 16x9 L&T->FCP) to a grading monitor, and the IOHD isn't supported for the higher end solutions.

So I've been waiting for this guy for a while as a little bird let me know about it quite some time ago.

That said, I'm intrigued by Resolve.

Resolve = Tangent Wave right now, Storm = Euphonix control right now.

And I have to give up a rocket or a fast raid card to leverage the GPU power on Resolve.

Would to God that Apple would add a few slots or at least onboard SAS, or USB 3.0, or at least a bloody e-sata port. Heck I'd even settle for 10Gb E on the motherboard.

And then there is the new DS announcement as well.

It's a great time for smaller shops, all this change creates opportunity. But the permutations are a bit complex to say the least.

I guess youz pays your money, and youz takes your chances...

I had a chance to discuss this stuff in depth at NAB, but there has been significant change. For those of you at IBC, it would be great to see if we could get answers to the Kona support for Resolve question. Anything on updated GPU cards also supported. I've heard speculation about a new Mac Quadro, but no hard data.

It's a no brainer for me if they are going to support the Kona as they claimed at NAB, I'll wait. AJA's products and customer support are something I can bet my business on, and I'd strongly prefer to go Kona.

Interesting times.

Unfortunately, that has been my experience as well. I decided to go all out and get the Kona 3 at the time because it did everything I needed it to, was consistent, tech support was great, etc. I know people who are happy with BM hardware. I guess YMWV. If I had to look at new hardware today, I would have to be heavily persuaded to move away from AJA. I always keep an open mind though. Perhaps BM hardware in combination with Resolve with be rock solid.
