  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

new Jamfuze info

Amit - You can do an offline in DNxHD36 which will be about 250GB of storage - but when going back to the original files - you can do a "set bin display" that will display the original master clips used in the sequence. In order for this to work with no headaches, do not consolidate the clips or sequences at any time. Once the associated original master clips are displayed, move them to another bin, select all, then rebatch import those at the finishing resolution. Sequence will link.

Or get a boatload of storage and keep everything at DNxHD 175 or 115 to start. ;)

Hi Micheal,
unless I'm missing something, rebatching the original master clips used for the cut will do the same thing as batch importing the sequence, meaning reimporting the entire shot. that is what i was planning to do first.
what i was aiming for with the 7Dfuze online bit, is importing only the parts of the shot that are used in the sequence.
I still haven't decided if i want to go DNXHD36 or SD 14:1. my heart says DNX and my Unity Lanshare says it's disconnecting.

Thanks, Amit

I would avoid the SD to HD conversions... but it may well work. I like reducing risk in whatever workflow is being planned. And yes, sequence batch import should work but don't consolidate. I like managing how I relink/capture by either set bin display or decompose beforehand.

right- an "offline/online" for quicktime and AVID

right- an "offline/online" for quicktime and AVID

firstly-hurry up and release AMA for quicktime AVID dudes!!
That will make AVID totally ace for this stuff.
In the meantime though
my "7dfuze offline" will make DNxHD 36 MXF of the quicktime file and give it a tape name in the metadata (tapename=file name) and a timecode value (just for avid) based on a 00:00:00:00 start time.
you then edit in media composer with dnxhd 36 and at the end decompose your final sequence and alt+drag all the decomposed clips into a new sequence. Export an EDL of THAT .
that gives you all the shots used in your drama.
make sure all the quicktime rushes are in one folder (altough they can be in subfolders under that)
the ONLINE bit so far does this:
takes and AVID EDL and parses the filename (from tapename in avid)
does a "find" for that file
opens it in quicktime pro
selects from the "in" timecode to the "out" timecode and makes a new reference movie called moviename-cut-n.mov where n is the event number in the edl
this then goes through ffmpeg (which understands reference movies! woo hoo!) to make it DNxHD 175 or whatever. ONLY 8 BIT dnxhd from ffmpeg. NO 175X yet.
then the _dnx file goes into writeavidmxf and makes the AVID MXF
****with the metadata from the EDL ie tapename and timecode*******
so these new files will relink and you've really only had to do THE BITS USED IN THE PROGRAM not the whole file.
whether it's faster/better is up to you...
I'm at work tomorrow so i can test it fully but it did seem to work OK on my G5 here at home.

It's all pretty standard unix tools and a bit of applescript so there's no rocket science yet.
my brother in law now has his i5/ssd/humongogfx card x computer working so maybe we'll get a command line tool to do all the applescript stuff soon.
will test tomorrow and do a vid for you if it works.
then email me if you want it.

7D to AVID conform Success!!! (at 25fps...)

7D to AVID conform Success!!! (at 25fps...)

I am a 25fps genius.

working with the 25fps 7D movs Amit sent me.

my program 7DFuze-offline
made dnx36 mxf from 7D .MOV for offline edit to MXF with tape name and timecode data in. (about 2 x duration of shot to do at 1920x1080)

edit in mediacomposer
decompose sequence
alt drag clips into new sequence and export EDL from that

my program 7Dfuze-conform
drag EDL into window
tell program where original 7D footage is
tell program where output MXFs should go

makes Shorter DNXHD 185 MXFs with correct tape and timecode info
put the mxfs into the Avid Mediafolder/MXF/1
relink the original seqquence to 185 media. All works
checked it out today.
done a movie but not uploaded it to my site as my little lad was going to football...real life you see. I do have one!
sound works also but there wasn't any in the files AMIT sent.

at 25fps all the numbers are easy. I'm not sure about 23.98.
If someone posts up some 23.98 I'll try and make that work too.

Jamie, I just placed 4 23.98 7D clips into a folder on my Dropbox. I'll message you for your email and share this folder.

I dig what you're doing with this Canon stuff. I would like to see 7DFuze have the option of just converting 7D media into a designated DNxHD mxf rez. We wouldn't need the re-conform option, preferring to edit at a full DNxHD rez for most projects. That's gotta either be easy or already exist.

all works at 25fps
as a slight update i had a thought that i could just make an ale for the offline import also and then you can import it to SD resolutions very easily in the avid.
my 25fps solution at the moment can also make the MXF media itself so you don't NEED an AVID on the 7D fuze machine but it seemed neater/quicker to do the online importing in the AVID via an ale.

someone is sending me some 23.98 stuff so i'll have a go with that tomorrow.
