heloo everyone
the posh developers are nearly ready with an "SDK" based jamfuze
(for those that don't know what it is
see other posts down in this forum...or go to
www.jamieparry.demon.co.uk and have a look at the videos of my demo)

so i'm probably not going to be around when it's ready to test out in the wild.
if you want it send an email to
jamie@sumners.co.uk
with jamfuze beta as the title and i'll set a rule to forward it to the relevant people.
so far progress is this
R3D to DNX36 avid MXF 6fps ish on a dual core 32 bit mac so reasonable expectations for real time ish on an 8 core 64 bit mac (like mine woo hoo!)

I think other codecs etc are going in and when i asked for DV at 23.976 i was met with blank stares of the "why wouldn't we do that" kind and they said it would probably happen.
that's probably happen instead of in my case "never gonna happen" so we're up on the deal already guys.

ALE and EDL stuff is in and you have a progress meter(!!!)
still mac os x only for now
still $49

so like i say if you're interested
email
jamie@sumners.co.uk
with
jamfuze beta
as the title
cheers

We're going to be installing a new MacPro just for Metafuze processing very soon .... so that means some kind of Windows as well. Man I'd love to only run Jamfuze.

I believe with the releases of RED tools offering native MXF/DNxHD, usrs will need to re-evalate their overall pipleine and solutions. For dailies, ROCKETCINE-X with native Avid media is fast, with complete metadata. A step by step guide reflecting that be available soon.

michael,

doesn't rocketcine-x require a redrocket??

what about for those who haven't bought one?

which new red tools go straight from .r3d to dnxhd .mxf files??

and can any of 'em go to avid SD .omf media???

(dang... i've been more out of the loop then i thought)

dude there's been no loop to be out of....

dude there's been no loop to be out of....

hiya everyone
jamfuze development/deployment was taken away from me at my boss's request so i haven't done anything with it at all! i've just been doing colourist stuff, so a proper, fast workflow to encode dnx36 mxf (or 10:1 SD mxf) from r3d and then conform a project ON A SYMPHONY to dnx185 or uncompressed mxf is good news as far as i'm concerned.
However I don't believe that's what is on the table yet (i'm not sure though as I don't really have access to RED/AVID things like other people on this list)
jamfuze still does all the things I listed above. But only in my room. sorry.
j

Correct that native Avid DNxHD requires a REDROCKET card - perhaps I am extrapolating what I am seeing into the future a bit by seeing what is being done in REDCINE-x which has some of the DNxHD work in it, but not complete. I am putting those two together and seeing a future where there is software and hardware accelerated transcode to dailies formats including Avid DNxHD.

I don't know of plans to do SD, although that is not difficult, it only is a metadata change, not the media itself. Deanan and I have discusses how this is done - it is their overloaded feature list and priority to manage.

Michael

Micheal,

A combination of hardware and software for real-time play out and edit would be a dream come true....if affordable!

How do you currently handle R3D's, Onset, dailies and final output?

Thanks
Dave

I am not saying that software would provide real time playout - well it can at 2K today, but the ROCKET card allows this to be done at 4K. It is making up for what the current CPU cannot do today. Over time CPU's will be able to do 4K, but we'll have 28K files to deal with... ;)

As far as how I handle things - if I am software only, review and transcode can happen on the set. For Media Composer that means QT wrapped DNxHD - which works, but has the extra media step. I am not tied to any platform, so I would use a Windows on set to transcode via MetaFuze.

What I like about the direction of the ROCKETCINE-X and REDCINE-X is a unified interface, color managed, and dailies creation that has parity across Mac and PC. Now the PC won't make ProRes but that is an Apple restriction, not RED.

Quick Questions...

Quick Questions...

In jamfuze if I had to change every word that said DNxHD to VC-3 would people know what it meant?
AVID licensing issues are too hard for me to deal with...
but if that was OK then I might be able to get MY version of jamfuze out and fully working to people soon.
Is it even necessary anymore? it's still gonna be cheap!
this is because.......
I've found an ace bash script compiler Woo Hoo! I'm such a geek....
this basically means i can protect the script a little (as my boss wants) and not to say the word DN*HD (as avid wants)
phew
i've also added a start and end frame option in cos my friend shot a horror film on the RED and had a corrupt file. so with the new options I could basically go up to the rubbish frame and then carry on from AFTER the rubbish frame. seemed to work OK. The ALE was complete nonsense however (thanks redline) but that didn't matter for 1 or 2 shots.

Jamfuse for Cannon 7D?

Jamfuse for Cannon 7D?

Could I theoretically use Jamfuze to batch import hi-rez Cannon 7D QT's?
I hate reimporting the entire shot.

Thanks for making me less afraid of scripts, Jamie !

Amit

theoretically.....

theoretically.....

nope.
jamfuze uses REDLINE to get at the R3D files and that has a way of starting the transcode anywhere you want in the file just by telling it in a line of script
so that's what i did

canon 7D don't use R3D as a file format so I can't use redline with it...so jamfuze no worky.

However if you put up some (short) 7D clips I'll have a play and see what I can do.
when i started jamfuze i had to mke a quicktime command line timecode thingy so maybe i can dust of my brother-in-law's brain again and see if we can cobble a way to do the following (google any bits you don't understand there's loads of info on the net that i use all the time)

awk to parse the EDL from AVID and get timecodes in and out
use the noninvented-thing to tell quicktime go to THAT timecode and make and in point then go to the OUT point, copy, make new movie, paste, export to dnxhd 120
then ffmpeg to unwrap the quicktime to raw dnxhd
aditc to get the start tc of the new quicktime
writeavidmxf to make the mxf

easy huh?
i'll have a go next week.
for anyone that's interested i did a "FCP layers xml" to "Nuke script" program this week!
I don't even have a copy of Nuke....:-)

Anyway Amit what is your current workflow and why don't you just import once to dnxhd 120 and then use that as the master?
why do you need to conform anything?
Excuse my lack of knowledge of 7D type stuff-I've never come across any.
Also scripting is not scary except if you type rm -R by accident (DON'T DO IT it just removes everything...and i mean everything.)

this is just funny though
#! /bin/sh
while [ 1 = 1 ]
do
drutil tray eject
read -t1
drutil tray close
read -t1

done

that just opens and closes your cd tray for ever- tie a piece of string to tray
tie other end of string to rocking seat with baby in
Geek Baby Rocking Device version 1.0
there is a video on the web somewhere.

public jamfuze

public jamfuze

sorry no idea as to when or if Jamfuze official release 1.0 will be available
as i say it has been appropriated by the company i work for.
I still send out my fully workable (redline based) solution to people though and just time limit it to 2 months and that keeps everyone happy.

at the moment i've been inspired by Amit's question to make a jamfuze type thing for canon 7d stuff.
if someone posts 2 files up somewhere i'll do it properly.
at the moment here's where i'm up to

7dfuze will take an EDL from AVID and
open each quicktime file that it finds in the EDL and make small "subclip" quicktimes carrying the correct timecode across if it has any.
ffmpeg can read the qt's and make dnxhd from them and i can give it the tape name and timecode from the edl in the mxf metadata using writeavidmxf

then you drag the mxf's you make into the Avid mediafiles/mxf/1 folder and relink your sequence to the new dnxhd 185 (or whatever) by tape and timecode

the theory is all good- it uses applescript at the moment to work with the quicktimes but it does work.
my only problem is...I'm not sure what anyone would use it FOR !!!
but you lot know me by now i just do these things to stop my brain turning to mush. It's my version of sudoku.

7D files

7D files

Hi Jamie,
Thanks so much for your help it's dearly apreciated.

the reason I need this offline-online workflow, is i'm facing an 8 episodes drama, shot in two cameras (both 7D), astimated 200 hours of rushes, to be edited by three editors simoultaniouslly. I told them they were mad to do it, but they just told me to deal with it, and here we are.

I got back to the studios today, so the first thing on my list is posting some QT's.
http://rapidshare.com/files/336689808/MVI_5564.MOV
http://rapidshare.com/files/336629884/MVI_5563a.mov
the second one is not the whole shot, i cut it to be able to upload, i hope it's still ok.

as for the TC issue, the files don't have any metadata as far as i can see. I'm using metacheater to add Tape name same as file name, so i can add tc there quite esaely, not sure if i want to though since the tc will only exist in avid, and not in the actual files.

Thanks again, Amit
