Don't come knocking (2004)>>>

“I think the optical quality is just crazy.
It’s such a pleasure for the eye, such a brilliant picture.
Sometimes it looks like you’re watching 3-D images.”
Wim Wenders

Are they new? I heard about them a year ago.
Supposedly you can swap out (in the shop of course) the anamorphic element depending if you're 4-perf vs. 3-perf (or 4x3 sensor vs. 16x9 sensor)
I heard $50,000 per lens. $300,000 for the set of six.
But admittedly, I have not kept up with it...
Cheers,
Harry

Theses lenses enable cinemascope from a 16:9 sensor.

They are made by Vantage Film in Europe, a rental house, that also designed the HAWK line of anamorphic lenses.

I have tested them with the RED, and it results in very nice cinemascope, that uses the full sensor.

The anamorphic distortion is not as nice as with the 2x, but given, that those lenses convert 4:3 chips into 16:9 and 16:9 chips into cinemascope, if find this idea quite genious.

Shooting on them with RED is not a problem technically, the only drawback is, that the preview is distorted for now. Maybe this get sorted out in future builds, though.

"Don't come knocking" had some FANTASTIC imagery in it. I didn't really like the film, but some of those scenes where the skies opened up and closed again in take, outstanding.

Nills,

you are right just because Wim Wenders has got pretty "boring" in his last films.

To see the Hawks in action that must watch again

Hopefully the RED Team will address 1.3x anamorphic preview squeeze very soon.

Neither of those movies used the new 1.3X anamorphics, they used the standard 2X anamorphic versions for 4-perf 35mm photography.

The 1.3X versions seems are rare as hens teeth and I'm looking forward to them showing up in Los Angeles. I don't know if Clairmont Cameras bought some yet.

Very interested in seeing these on a Red (Arri in the UK do the older Hawks so I don't know if they're intending on getting these too?). Post-wise I suppose 1.33x anamorphics are not currently supported (not to mention the viewfinder will not display the image unsqueezed correctly)? If these lenses are really going to be that rare I fear it might be low down on Red's list of priorities for future support :-(
