  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Handle System for Red/Epic

Very cool. How much? Will it work on 15mm rods as well?

Manhandle? Where are you guys, west hollywood? I'm just saying....

Hmm, I will have the internet elves add the prices without having to buy it. Prices are $500 for the handle, I think $90 for Das Wunder Bolt. C'mon love the name, it works on so many different levels ;-) Right now in stock is 19mm only, 15mm will be 1 week to 10 days lead time. If there is demand for 15mm we will make a batch of those as well.

Nick you forgot to mention the heat sink property.

Last summer nick and I worked on a feature. it was hot. 2 otherwise identical Reds, working in identical conditions, shooting at the same time for the same duration. The only difference, Nick's had a man-handle, mind had a standard red handle. Mine overheated all day long, nick's didnt. The nick's man-handle was hot to the touch all day long (no pun intended.) I bought mine from nick as soon as he got back into his shop.

Thanks John ;-) Yeah, I didn't want to make that claim without a more scientific test. It certainly does bleed off some heat though.

Nick

The red handle is rubber-coated. The rubber could be acting as an insulator, the last thing you'd want on a heat-sink. However, I'd still agree that I would like to see a more scientific test to be conducted on this claim.

It would be curious to see if a test could be done with THE SAME CAMERA, using two different handles, and then another trial with the rubber coating of the red handle stripped and see how well they all perform. Oh, and maybe a trial where there is no handle as well. Okay, 24 credits of labs has made me the scientific type.

Im not sure I understand how the wunder bolt works. I see it replaces the stock bolt, but how does it function exactly?

And why couldn't you just put a $10 kipp handle on the bolt that already comes with it.

I have two cameras, one w/ Red Handles and one with ET Cheese Stick...no difference in temp on the two, which shoot side-by-side regularly.

Well, it works exactly the same as a quick release on a bicycle wheel. Kip locks are bolts, not nuts. This replaces the stock bolt, with a proven simple system. Open the lever, move the cradle, close the lever, done.

Got it. Sounds like a good solution.

BTW kipp handles have internal threads, so I'm suggesting putting the kipp on the orig bolt using a corresponding internal thread. But I like your idea better.

On the heat dissipation issue, as I said, this is not a claim I make. I think it has a lot to do with what alloys are used and exactly where they are attached to the camera. For example, The instance that John mentions, I was running ET Nickel plated aluminum rods, and he was running Red stainless. Both nickel and aluminum are better conductors of heat than SS. Plus, I had a big mass of aluminum on those aluminum rods (the manhandle). I don't think that any intelligent person would argue that if you increase the surface area of a heated surface, you do not increase the heat dissipation of said surface, I am not claiming that my surface is in anyway better than another.

Just a word from an AC…

After using Red's stock handle over the last year and a half, the Manhandle was a revelation. I had never felt comfortable supporting the camera load with Red's top handle (we've all seen or heard about them snapping), but the Manhandle supports a fully loaded camera (even with a heavy zoom) with no problem. I'll also back up those heat-sink claims (I was on the shoot JBV described earlier).

Do yourself a favor and get one of these. Best handle for the Red One, period.

Yeah 90 Bucks for a Bicycle quick release, gives you a pretty good perspective of how much and how overpriced and ridiculous this 500 dollar handle is.

Whoever committed the mistake of buying the Original RED Handle and (production crap) sorry (pack) is going to be tempted to buy this handle.
and therefore throwing his money down the drain on stuff that is neither professional nor compatible with any other RED product (EPIC or whatever they do).
I'm 500 % sure that it will not prevent a camera from overheating since one of my cameras has lived since new with out a handle in almost every job inside my Alien Revolution and its never ever been overheated not even on Morocco's dessert this past summer.or in the humidity and ridiculous heat of its hometown miami.

Save your money for really useful and well thought well crafted accessories. ET is a great example.

Nick, I would just like to commend you on cool product names.

Way more "badass" than Terrorist Machine Bomb Monster Thingy. :)

I second that! i'm glad its not called....
the intercontinental ballistic missile 500 dollar handle.

Dear Gustovo,

Thank you for your thought full, well phrased criticism. As a response, this handle will work on any camera with 19mm top rods, Epic included. As far as over priced goes, I suggest you go down to your local machinist, show them a picture and ask how much it would cost to make one. As for the Wunder bolt, there are 4 machined parts that make up the bolt. It is not a bicycle quick release, it just works on the same principle, but thanks for noticing what an elegant solution to the problem it is. As to your criticism of my craftsmanship, you are basing this on what exactly?

Anyway, thanks for looking and have a nice day ;-)

If you are interested in demoing a handle, send me a PM, and I'll send you one to try out. All I ask in return is that you send it on to the next person on the list.

Happy Holidays,

Nick
