  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New German Primes: Price below 10.000 per set.

Just to clarify, they told you the price would be four figures but you told them you'd pay five figures so now they are thinking about changing the pricetag? I'm sure people will love you here lol!

Paul
they certainly should be learning to have their clientele from the most tough red fanboys crowd..

Hmm... Three T1.9 primes for EUR10k? I'd get a set of Optica Elites, if I were you. Or the Red Pro primes, of course...

My 0.02...
Dom.

I thought these lenses were supposed to be as revolutionary as the Red camera?

So far, the only lenses that seems as revolutionary as the Red camera are the Red lenses themselves..

Lol at this train wreck of a marketing ploy. A bunch of silly claims, spin and BS followed by the release of some kit that looks like it was designed by Trabant. Too funny.

Yeah. Pretty poor execution. If these were the only cheap primes on the market then it might not matter. But there are too many great options coming up to make mistakes like this.

Let's be honest, the only thing that's not as Laguun said, it's price. I mean, are the specs different than he said? The only thing I might see different in the specs is it seems like I recall hearing that the barrels were supposed to have a 360 barrel turn for focus, and the current marks look more like still lens marks than cine.

Disappointing? Yes. Am I excited about hearing the RED primes start shipping next week? YES!

Matthew

I don't recal Laguun specifing how many were in the set. Although the implied- was a set for 10,000 euros. I don't think many would consider 3 a set. My guess is the number of lens were changed at some point after his announcement.

Not very sexy lenses though.

Guys, I said this before: Don't hold on price too much for any of these lenses. As the dust settles from all of these lenses being released at once, prices may change. Even listed pricing. We shall see.

I'm sorry these lenses are not as physically pretty as you would like. I know that REDusers seem to think that "badass" industrial design is as important as technical performance. I can tell you that these are telecentric lenses that are optimized for use on a digital sensor with microlenses. This is not necessarily the case for other lenses out there, old or brand new.

These lenses are from IB/E, but the company is working with a Major Optical Company That Everyone Knows so that they can deliver glass in volume with the highest quality and consistency. Don't know the details where the new RED glass comes from other than designed in the US, manufactured in Japan? The Rebel lenses are designed in Germany and manufactured in Germany.

or a mount..
or a mounts system :lipssealed:

Hi Matthew,

Mechanics & focus throw is where ultra primes beats Standards by a long way . If all I want is still lens focus throw then still lenses for $400 each would do fine.

Stephen

i understand the need in machine vision to have telecentric lenses where the filmed object (smaller than the front lens element) does not have perspective 'distortion' (shortening of lenghts..so you can really read out correct measurements..but as a cine lens...?

What you are referring to is telecentric in the *front* of the lens. The ability to keep a constant size over a small range of depths can be really helpful in a measurement application, where only a single camera can be employed.

Telecentric in the back of the lens is a really good thing with micro lenses, low-pass filters, and the cover glass on the sensor. You will find that just about any new lens coming out of canon or nikon has this characteristic, whether they mention it in the marketing literature, or not. Film is far more tolerant of rays coming at it from any angle. Sensors, not so much.

Don't you think its time to stop with vague declarations? Maybe I'm an idiot, but until I don't read the names I'm not able to know about whom you are talking.

I appologies for the tone I used, but....

we are all as same as you

edit
except stephen sure.. w/ the $400 still glass

Mitch you sound more and more like a snake oil salesmen everyday. Nobody gives a crap if Schott makes the glass. Just like nobody gives a rats ass if the lenses are designed and manufactured in Germany. Saying Germany doesnt imply the sense of quality it used to.

The Japanese passed the Germans along time ago in terms of optics. Everyone knows that. Look at long lost Leica.

If I were free to state the name then I would. The point was that Laguun wasn't lying and that these lenses can be mass produced to very high and consistent quality. The lenses were designed and manufactured in Germany just like he stated.

I'm not the one who started this thread. I did not build this hype. It is not my or Abel's style. For a long time I wasn't even sure that these were the same lenses that we had anything to do with. There are other lenses that are in our booth that I have not said a peep about. Now that the Rebel website is up I figure I'm free to talk about it up to the point that I was specifically asked not to.

You might not like these lenses. You may prefer others. You may prefer lenses that Abel does not represent. That is your choice. I'm just here t try to answer technical questions as accurately as I can. I am not trying to sell you this glass. It may be right for you, it may not.

Rebel 4K lenses are made by IBE (+Schneider-Kreuznach, Shott), a sort of optics joint venture.

no more astro berlin tale then? : (

The new German primes that everybody here is talking about (even Jan and Kaya) are coming from Astro Berlin.

This information is confirmed to me by several sources from Berlin and Germany.

Those brand new PL lens prime designs are mostly based on old Astro superspeed prime lens designs dated from 50s and 60s of the last (20th) century.

They were famous, high quality and also affordable even for that former times.

Have a look at some pictures here and go for more at the links about Astro Berlin lens design below:

"Astro Berlin was a German optical company from 1921 to 1991.
It was located in Berlin, in what became the Eastern part after the war.
It made cine and still camera lenses as well, some with impressive specifications."
