  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NEW Firmware scare!!

Guessing your Epic isn't under warranty? What about insurance? Hopefully they can fix it without too much damage out of your pocket.

Well so far so bad. RED cannot reproduce the problem so they are suspecting it's my fault. As for a loaner, there are no EPICs available and client will not accept a Scarlet. So before the camera even reaches RED's door, I am down $2,000.00

Something tells me this is going to be devastating.

I swear guys, the EPIC was sitting on a table. It had performed perfectly for 12 hours the day before.. It was turned on with old firmware and looked perfect.. The new firmware was installed and looked perferct. ALL I DID was turn on the sleep mode and walked away. Because of my hearing loss, I cannot hear the fans go off and on.. When I came back 30min later it was an oven.. I baby my camera, I did not break it.

Very stressed out about all this. Sending camera in tonight but I fear damage has already been done.

I will never go within a million miles of the word BETA again.. Lesson learned.

Jay

Yeah they want 5K.. As for insurance, my deductible is $2,500.00.. I am not a fan of insurance.. Quick to take my premiums but horrible to get a check from

Jay

Sorry to hear this outcome Jay... I worry about the same thing with my deductible being $2500 too. Sure makes me want to take the beta firmware off my camera.

My bacon was saved st the last minute by RED. Camera still broke, but they have made arrangements to make sure I will be able to handle the job on Wednesday.

They have never let me down.

Jay

Jay, how were you powering the camera when this happened? Battery or AC?

I wonder if anyone has had an issue with an insurance company denying coverage because of beta firmware? They're always looking for an out and it wouldn't surprise me if this happens going forward...but it does put us in a tough spot -do a beta and potentially pooch your camera or be brave and try out new features and fixes?

Beta's only ever get out of Beta through extensive testing.

Very glad that RED stepped in here to help you out.

I would be interested to here what the BombSquad dig up on this.

In the event that a failsafe wasn't activated - and this was due to the firmware ... there might warrant an period where firmware is designated Alpha (where you don't leave the camera unattended).

Jay - If you'd been anywhere near me, I'd have leant you my camera to get out of the pickle.

AJ.

I am amazed insurance would cover this sort of thing in the first place , it's not theft, fire, water damage or been dropped.

Jay, did you try re-flashing the firmware to see if that enabled it to power up? I'm guessing it's already en-route to Red - let us know how it turns out. Here's hoping for an easy/cheap fix!

That is great to hear! I'm glad you've been taken care of!

RED Bomb Squad - a knight in shiny RED Armor !

If my camera is not booked and you can provide insurance my camera is yours if you need it.

Jay, thank god Red took care of you. That is such a relieve to hear for new owners like myself. By the way, I don't know if you saw this, but Justin had also offered the use of his camera. That was beyond nice of him.

This was part of my question...if nobody has experienced any such claim yet COULD it be an out for the insurance companies? My guess is yes. That was the gist of the post.

to me a firmware that cooks a camera (on any available setting and especially on a default setting) is alpha...at best....beta software has glitches, data might get lost, unexpected shut downs,...that kind of thing....
i am running the beta and have not had any problems.....but i really wish we had some official word on this....the use of sleep mode, which combination of fan settings might be a problem...and considering Jay's story this is not some problem, this is a serious issue....

I'm sorry for what happened to Jay and his Epic - But - I tend to look at the situation from a slightly different perspective: Perhaps the beta firmware, and Jay's problem are unrelated? Maybe his cam would have cooked no matter what because of some other unknown problem? Before this becomes some blown out of all internet proportion 'issue' that we hear about ad-nauseum at the rental house / on set / from people who don't even own the cameras - we should take a breath and wait and see what RED tells Jay the problem is.

I'm using the Beta build, and I'm half way through the 4th shoot day on it - no trouble, nor am I worried.

there is always the chance I am wrong guys.. Engineering at RED was NOT able to reproduce my problem.. If they were, they would have told me ASAP. Perhaps I was being a bit of an alarmist. Let's wait and see what they say

Jay

Glen, like i said, i am using it as well without any problems....and i agree that at this point we don't know if the firmware actually caused the issue....but i still think it is not too much to ask to get an official statement, stating that the issue cannot be replicated in internal red tests (or...?) letting us know that red still stands by their beta release (which comes with all usual/normal caveats, which do not include frying the camera).....or to give a warning....that there MIGHT be an issue with a certain combination of settings and to best avoid this or that.....
i hate the internet chatter as much anyone and the way things get blown out of proportion.....and the best way to put a lid on it is for red to provide the info and not everybody else...
