New FCPX - Cant leave files in place ?

Hi Guys,

I just upgraded to the latest version of final cut X and wanted to add a few clips to an existing edit, in the past I always chose the option "Leave Files In Place" because of the way my media is managed on different drives. But now that option is greyed out and I have no other choice but to "Copy Files to Library" ? This is a massive stuff around for me. is there any way around this ? I checked the FCPX settings under "Import" and even there to box for "leave files in place" is ticked, but when I connect the drive with the media on it....it wont give me that option. is this a bug or where am I going wrong here ?

I think i found the issue....for some reason the final cut media import window recognises my external drive as a Camera....not as a storage drive and maybe therefore wont let me leave the clips in its original origin folder on the drive. Is there a way to get around this by purging a system cache or something ?

I'm not at my computer right now, but you can always drag the clip from the finder to the timeline as an alternative.

annoying though that the media importer cant do it straight from fcpx.

You set the storage locations as a general preference setting for the library now, rather than at every import.

I guess the idea is to reduce the amount of file scattering and increase consistency by encouraging users to set the preference once during library creation and then leave it alone.

From what I can tell initially, it's a bit more powerful and flexible now.

Click on your Library and then in the inspector you'll see Storage Locations - Modify Settings.
That will allow you to choose between within or outside the Library.
