  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New FCP Studio rumors. All in one app. Entirely re-written, interface deeply modified

I hope Apple surprises us all at NAB 2010.

Based on what I've seen from others ... they will need too.

I think they will (or at least around that time). My guess is that Apple is working on making Final Cut Pro a Cocoa app (which will probably utilise Grand Central and OpenCL in Snow Leopard). But of course this would require a massive overhaul, having to rewrite many parts of the application... So I'm thinking that they probably thought it would take too long so they released FCS 3 in the interim, and will release the new version some time next year.

I doubt it will be an all in one application though...

While I agree with what I know you're saying...

There's not a lot that Apple "needs" to do. Their stock has more than doubled in less than 6 months, it's been targeted to rise at least another 1/3 of its current price, the company had gross margins of over 36% and total revenue of almost $10 billion in the last quarter alone, during one of the worst consumer economies in history. While we all see what we want to see, the inescapable fact is that Apple as a company is doing just about everything right.

Financially, sure. And we all know how small a % of that revenue comes from FCS don't we.

I'm saying if Apple wants to "lead" the desktop post (NLE/finishing) race in the near future ... they will really need to step up.

Obviously ... they don't need to if we are just talking stock market.

I know. And I did say I agree. And as you correctly said, the interests of those here and in the industry in general, in truth represent only a tiny blip on Apple's radar. And with the rise in bottom line significance of the iPhone and its derivatives, that blip is likely quite a bit smaller than it was 3 years ago - the last time Apple had a booth at NAB. I'm not dismissing the likelihood that there will be a significant update, but I do think that for Apple, the PR value of having "Big Hollywood Names" attached to their products far outweighs any real financial value that the Pro Apps might possess.

It would be a mess if they didn't continue to offer FCS (2009) or at least some backwards compatibility. It sounds awesome but I too worry about "jack of all trades, master of nothing." I kinda hope they just update the FCP interface to match Motion and Soundtrack Pro, and copy and paste the functionality into the "Edit" room in the super-app. Heck, their tagline should read "64-bit rewrite, not a feature has changed".

I cannot emphasize enough how much this can't resemble the iMovie HD to iMovie 08 transition.

I could not be more displeased with the Motion and Soundtrack Pro interfaces. Colour and Shake are/were the only Apple post tools with UI's I can get behind - elegant and business oriented. It says something, I suppose, that Apple didn't design those UI's...

There are a number of stupid bugs that need to be quashed, and some basic features implemented to make FCP a complete post solution.

Also, they need a new version of Shake, but that's not going to happen.

It seems to me like it would be fairly simple (as far as huge software packages go) to make FCS all things to all people for visual post work, but Apple just doesn't seem to be willing to listen to feedback and implement change that really matters.

Yup. Well said MM. And there are "others" who are a LOT more motivated.

I think its just wishful thinking... not just for all the legitimate reasons Mike and Mark pointed out... but I also blame this more on Job's health, than mere profits. His single minded obsession to be the BEST at everything, is what made Apple great... and its not all about profits for Jobs... for Apple it is...

I just dont see an emphasis on MAC software to sell computers anymore. Apple has accomplished what was thought impossible just a few years ago. They are converting more and more windows users (non pro people) to MAC.

Then take into account only 6500 Redusers care about 4K support... and it just doesnt make sense... UNLESS Jobs stepped in and said... "Do it, because I said so..." like he did with the guts of the MAC PRO... where he made them redesign the board because it didnt look the way he wanted. When they said. "but nobody will see it" he said.
" I WILL".

So my advice is we all write letters to Steve Jobs... seriously. To remind him who helped keep Apple afloat pre-iphone... the legion of loyal pro app and pro kit users.

thats my 1.2 cents adjusted for inflation and the declining US dollar

I don't necessarily think Apple wants to lead the pack in the NLE's race and I personally don't care if they do or not. Avid is bar none the top editor IMO in the industry. I love FCP but Apple doesn't seem dedicated to supporting this portion of it's business in the long term. I don't see Avid going anywhere anytime soon. Personally I would love to see Apple sell FCP to a company who has more time to devote. I do care about them supporting the MacPro and would love to see them support NVidia drivers to allow us to run the faster graphics cards. I've personally started transitioning back to Avid MC after a ten year hiatus. I didn't realize how much more I like Avid since I've been using FCP consistently since it came out (price reasons). I like the idea of having both tools in the toolkit but would like continued support along the way.

I recognize this is not a scientific or necessarily logical view, but all I need to know about Apple's commitment to FCS, I learned the day of the launch.

That day, on the Apple homepage - there was not *one* mention of the launch. Not one. That day, the homepage was dedicated to the Nano and iPhone.

While ProApps is huge for our industry, it is very clearly not core to Apple's mission as a company.

Lucas

Apple asked Academy Award Winners Francis Ford Coppola and Walter Murch to make a promotional movie "Crafting Tetro" about the new FCS 3.0.

Apple is serious in its way and hope that with the new upgrade will give us finally R3D realtime using RR for editing and grading.

For sure in that case sooner or later after FCS 4.0 launch that some of the competition will start to run for their money...

Personally I've seen Media Composer stomping all over FCP in every sense (workflow, take-up by media organisations, efficiency). Pros generally don't need a whole suite, and when they need it integrated, like in Avid, or in post production they need the best the industry has to offer, like Pro Tools (also an Avid product).

Also the one point that was better about FCP – which was being able to mix material of different framerates in the timeline – has now been surpassed by Avid, which does it without rendering. Then you get to all the other benefits like AMA and excellent media management (as opposed to none) and being able to edit transitions properly without stopping to go into a vastly different mode, and having lists of qualified hardware so it can be rock solid, and being able to run it on a WinPC or a Mac, and extensive use of OpenGL and far less rendering or the option of no rendering for many effects etc etc etc. Avid is just so much faster, I don't wait around for a render like in FCP.

Perhaps Apple are trying to improve FCs workflow so it's suit can actually be used in time critical environments. Who knows? Right now the FC workflow is just laughable for those who need a fast turnaround.

Perhaps instead they are going further into the "prosumer" route. But frankly if it's going to be used mainly for weddings and events they already have a very competent app in iMovie, which is really easy to use and very easy to understand for anyone who is not familiar with editing tape or film.

Why are you in this thread? No one wants to start a FCP vs Avid war. They both are very viable, professional pieces of software that have proven to get the job done. It's very arguable which does what better but this thread was about the rumored "super-app" Final Cut Studio to be released at NAB.

If we are talking about a new final cut then I think the reasons why it might need to be re-made should be discussed. And it's pros/cons compared to other systems are surely part of that discussion.

I suppose partly I'm talking about Avid so much because I'm really stoked by how good Avid is after using final cut for ages. I just can't help shouting about it. Is that OK? :ihih:

it's quite OK to me... and I havent used an Avid since er um. 1999 when 12GB drives cost $1200 a week to rent!

I dont see a SUPER APP coming from Apple, nor the Game Changer Sanjin (ok most of us) hope for... i.e.e a Scratch competitor for 1/5th the cost and runs on a MAC.

Please PM me, Id love to chat with you about your kit.

Back to thread. I think Apple will continue to move towards prosumer apps
because it is just plain good business sense... not for any of us, but for Apple's new legion of iPhone users who are switching to mac in droves.

Vs. is Bs.

Vs. is Bs.

It's pretty funny reading how people get fired up so fast about the Vs. wars.
Why is that?
Do you really think what you are using, is the uber-best in the world and nothing is close to it? Your workflow is king and nothing else?

These are professional applications that produce movies.
Some like to do it with a Mac and FCS. Some like a PC with Avid.
We all heard it so many times, how Avid is better than FCP, or vice versa.
I use FCP. I love it. I think it is very good, but It doesn't make Avid crap, by anyway. Many, many pros use it - how can it be?
I don't use Avid anymore, but i know it is a very good program, used by many Pros. Great. We got competition - GOOD.
Adobe wants to play? even better. I like to talk about the software differences, don't get me wrong, but i tend not to say - this is the best for everything.
We all know these software companies tend to learn from one another...

Pros & cons change by users, budget and their workflow.
There is no "1" best video app out there. Taste varies.
Well, not until we get that uber-duber super app! - sigh -.

Back to the topic... I am not so sure about this idea.
I like to have multiple pro applications, taking care of each part of the workflow. I like to focus on each post job at a time - it feels professional. As a former senior compositor, colorist and editor at a high-end post facility, that makes sense to me. That said, the rooms approach might work, if done "right".
I like the interface of Motion and Soundtrack, that should be spread along the whole suite, with color shifts [Color should always be dark].
Some users just said they hate the Motion interface. Or that FCS is not a pro level app. Or Avid has the bad interface, or cumbersome finishing tools.
It's no surprise we think different [pun not intended].
BTW - Nate, i totally agree with you and your media management POV. Not many of us around... weird, isn't it?

I hope FCS4 will be full-64 bit, faster, tight RED integration [Native color workflow works for me], small trim upgrades, as stable [my FCP system is VERY stable] and more refined interface across the suite.
Along with the seemingly subtle but super-important upgrades to FCP7 [Prores, speed tools, markers, background processing], it will be a solid, professional post suite.

So many old and new rumors these days, Phenomenon-style, you just can't know if it is all a scam...
Now, Jim - What about those Oct 30th announcements?
That is news we can sink our teeth into...

how about free?

Mark my words. REDCINE-X. You ain't seen nuthin yet ...

Mark looking forward to see how REDCINE-X and ROCKETcineX will ROCK them all !!! :emote_head_explode: :hurray: :emote_happyhappy:
