At the risk of being flamed by those who would suggest I am spreading rumors, I'll point out, up front, that this is a snippet from a Macintosh rumor site. So, yes, at this point it is, indeed, a rumor, but perhaps one of interest to us FCP users:

An email purportedly from Steve Jobs said:

"A great release of Final Cut is coming early next year."

Sent from my iPad

As reported here:

Yippee, if it turns out to be true! Long overdue, but very welcome.

absolutly welcome, your right :auto:

Yeah, but there's a couple of issues here:

1) Think about all the things that Steve-O has declared "Awesome" in the past couple years. And then think of the neglect of the Pro Apps, killing XServe, etc.

2) Given that FCP is based in Quicktime, and Quicktime hasn't been rewritten for 64-bit yet, and that the Quicktime rewrite isn't slated to release until 10.7, any FCP update prior to that isn't going to do what everyone wants.

Don't mean to put a total downer on things, just my particular take. I would *LOVE* an updated, totally awesome FCP. But at the same time, the pessimistic part of me is pretty sure Apple doesn't give a damn anymore and what we'll end up getting is "iMovie Pro" as opposed to the grand update that will blow Adobe and Avid out of the water that people expect.

It's also been suggested that FCS could be delayed to Summer next year. I'm going to hedge my bets and say spring for a release. Too late for me - I'll have to invest in Avid next year, as my broadcast clients move toward more robust shared media workflows - FCP sucks at that.

Worst thing about these rumours? Resellers quoting them back to me as if they have some special inside knowledge from the Jobsphone. I get bored saying "yeah, I read Apple Insider too".

Spring would make sense for some sort of "Announce at NAB, release a bit later" thing. Problem is Apple hasn't done that in forever. Hell, IIRC Apple hasn't even been *at* NAB the past few years.

I honestly think we won't see a new FCP until 10.7 comes out. Unless Apple really doesn't care at all about the pros (and wants to admit it) they're not going to do another half-ass release like FCP7. Thus they'll wait until they can support the "major" features, like 64 bit.

I am wondering if they might start to integrate Final Cut Server into the Studio product to improve the collaborative experience in FCS.

That certainly seemed to be the idea when Apple aquired the software, but who's heard much about that since 2008?

I really remember NAB 2008 as an exciting step foreward:

Final Cut Server
REDCODE in FCP

Then came IBC with the first preview of RAW in Color and the Compressor WraptorPlugin.

Then...

FCS3, a great bugfix experience...

And Snow leopard with its QuicktimeX promises...

I don't think the pro world is still a priority for that company.

I'm totally fed up with apple. I remember not that many years ago when apple didn't have such a big market share that the only people who bought Macintosh and therefore kept the brand alive were Image Jockeys. Now Apple doesn't really need us any more, they have no use for us. I'm completely fed up with their half assed Macpro releases, Macbook after Macbook and iphone/pod releases mounting up. If i could find an alternative i'd drop Apple tomorrow for their utter contempt, Jobs is a total wan**r.

Robert, my guess is that you don't own Apple stock.

Hell, I *DO* own Apple stock, and my opinion's more or less the same. Is it good for my portfolio's bottom line? Hellz yeah. Am I kinda pissed off at the way Apple's ignoring their pro users? Also yes. Is Steve Jobs a... whatever? Yep. A highly effective whatever who's made me a bunch of money, but still.

Being happy with the overall course of the company doesn't exempt me from being annoyed at a particular division. Actually, it makes me *MORE* annoyed. Hold on while I check my last annual report... Yep. Apple has more money than God. Slow(ish) sales in the pro department aren't going to significantly affect the bottom line. They're not *losing* money on the pro apps/hardware, so besides "I want 11 bajillion dollars instead of 10 bajillion" there's no real reason to dump it.

Ben, agreed. :iagree: My hyprocrisy runs deep, my sentiments are shared. I was a frequent follower of the Apple Professional Profiles (http://www.apple.com/pro/profiles), but noticed that section of the site stopped being updated on almost 1 year ago.

Our shop is channeling the negative Apple energy differently by divvying up resources in case Apple slides out the back door in the middle of the night.

Hmm. I'd like to see a 64 bit version, too. I was very angry about the last upgrade! I won't be buying on the day it's released this time.

64-bit must be a lot harder than we realize. Avid does not have a 64 bit version of MC either. Perhaps this has to do w/ Quicktime, which is still only 32-bit? (As both apps require QT to run.)

Adobe is supporting QT files in CS5 – which is 64 bit. They do it better than Apple (less gamma problems).

The gamma problems in QT make me want to blow my head off.

As Pro Users and/or Business Owners we need to know more than "it will be Awesome", we need to have a pretty good idea to make Plans, Budgets, Employee's Training plans, NAB Plans, etc. For instance. would it not be good for us to know what to expect from FCS4 in regards to R3D Files? so we can say. you know what CS5 looks good but I really like FCP the workflow we have is working ok. So I will just wait for FCS4 because I know we will not be disappointed Plus Steve has said it it will ship in (xx-xx-xxxx).
Due to the lack of interest and Neglect of the Pro user we have Jumped ships to Adobe. although I personally continue to use FCP once and a while. But with that said I too would like to see a REAL update to FCS. but I got to say it. my expectations are pretty high and something tells me I will be disappointed along with most of us here. I hope I am wrong so my fellow editors do not have to learn another set of Programs ASAP if jumping ships just to be able to get the work out the door. like I did (got to admit I am still working on it. It is a damm big suite. 18 Apps).
