  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New FCI Monitor - LM2340W

Might be nice for some, but for my uses I'd rather get a 10 bit computer display and use a converter box between. About a third of the price and better performance.

The step up to the 2461W is where I'd like to spend all my "high end" monitoring money- a true 10 bit broadcast panel, which is I think the minimum to outperform the above.

If Red announces a fantabulous laser projector I can afford on 11/3/11, then all bets are off of course.

I really don't think they're ready to announce a laser projector that's ready to ship as thats the new benchmark for announcements.

I think people need to relax their expectations of Nov 3rd a bit. It will most likely be a single Scarlet with Specs and release/shipping dates.

just my 2 sense,
Jason

Sorry if I made it seem as though that were my expectation.

I am not in a mode right now where I must buy to work. So, I can hold off and see what is announced.

I do think that Red is up to something, and that they are truing to deliver laser projectors and other 4K display tech.

I doubt they'll announce anything in that department, but if they did it wouldn't be a complete surprise.

I think Red is in a mood to come out swinging ... and I think they are going to have several announcements. 4 in fact is what Jim alluded to.

I don't want to derail this thread more, and I intentionally unsubscribed from the one with the speculation.

Did you pull the trigger on this setup? If not, any changes planned?

No, I didn't pull the trigger, and no no changes are planned yet.

Actually I do have to plan some changes ... I may have to get three displays.

I have a Gateway POS (Piece of sh!t) monitor I need to replace because it just started flaking out... and I have an aging Apple Cinema Display that's turning pinker by the day yet remains my best desktop display.

Given how long they've both served (7 years for the ACD and 5 for the Gateway - I actually have two of those) I don't think I should have qualms about replacing them ... but I'm considering at least one Apple Thunderbolt display for the desktop. Assuming I can find a nice antiglare solution.

Argh ... this stuff adds up so damn fast!

you'll have to elaborate on how you believe that the afforementioned products you mentioned outperform the FSI monitor. I've had a similar setup to what you mentioned...only i had orignally a Dell monitor, then went to HP dreamcolor and finally dropped the $$ on the FSI and it is NIGHT and day to compare them. The specs say one thing, but real world use is another. I constitntly get best colors that match almost perfectly for broadcast using my FSI...when i say almost....meaning 95% or better. With my old setup using Dreamcolor and SDI to HDMI converter the colors looked great on my screen, but when sent in to a studio, they were not spot on and took additional post work. Bottom line is i took the less expensive route there as well....i had to, but as soon as i understood or could see the difference, i upgraded immediately. For the $$, i think there's no better deal than FSI unless you are willing to drop $8k or more.

Edit...i bought the 2461w....and what a monitor.

You are describing a calibration problem. You can calibrate the BMD HDLink + computer monitor setup. If you do that properly you'll have a better system than the FSI 2340W that started this thread.

If you think you are going to have calibration issues, then the FSI monitors come calibrated, and you get to use their calibration device to make sure its spot on.

This is a reasonable trade-off and the price reflects that ... The HP 2740 is $750 and the HDLink is $500, making the total system $1250 compared to the FSI 2340W at ~$2200.

If you can ensure calibration, then the HDLink+Monitor setup will outperform the FSI 2340 ... because the computer monitor is a quality display and its 10 bit.

Now ... if you carefully read the post you replied to you'll see that I say that the 2461W outperforms the HDLink+Computer Monitor setup. Its properly calibrated, and its a better quality panel, and it has a better backlight plus its designed for the purpose of grading... and the price reflects that at $5000. Its not the best monitor you can possibly buy, but its freaking awesome.

And yes, I'm jealous of yours!

You know I'm going to say this, but any display is only as good as the calibration performed on it, and to do that requires a good Colour Management System...

I'd obviosuly suggest LightSpace CMS and probe (the new i1 Display Pro is very good value!).

I do a lot of display calibration, and we have a lot of customers out there with different displays, so we have a lot of experience... I'm happy to answer any questions on this subject.

Hi Steve!, I'm considering to buy in the near future the lightspace, but its a little bit out of my budget, and i want to know if probe is a must., or i can use my xrite i1 display pro?. I tested this week the sony oled 2541 and tried to calibrate it with my i1 display pro, and it not detected the monitor. Maybe the problems is too black? Or the xrite software?. No problems with my others monitors, only with this.

Thanks,

Jose.

Hi Jose,

The i1 Display Pro works well with LightSpace CMS, so will be fine with the software.

I've not tested one calibrating an Oled, but I can't imagine a problem. Did you try with a grayscale displayed on the monitor? And what integration time did you use - you will need a slow integration time for very dark colours.

Cheers,

Steve

I only used the i1profile tool. It start calibration and after some seconds of black screen it fails... I have this problem only with oled. Can be good to know for sure if i1dpro + lightspace can work with oled.

Thanks,

Jose.
