  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Fast Prime Set WOW

Really!!!!

Really!!!!

Why does it matter?
Would you think highly of them if they were made by Zeiss?
Or would you think lowly of them if they were made by a smaller company like Tokina?
In my experience, the manufacturer does not determine the quality of a lens.
What's more important is the people involved and the amount or care and passion that goes into development.
I've seen amazing things come from small companies.
If I recall, RED was a mere handfull of employees when they released the RED One and we all know how well that went. ;)
Make no mistake, that little red badge on these lenses will be worth as much as the lenses themselves. After all- what would a Ferrari be without the prancing horse- a cheesy pocket rocket

Haha. True.
A badge with a heck of a reputation and pedigree such as these is worth a lot.

Yea I did hear full frame and less then half the price of MP's

a press quote

"The lenses should be ready around Cine Gear time: *June 2010, in focal lengths of: 16, 18, 21, 25, 35, 40, 50, 65, 75, and 100 mm . Additional focal lengths will be available later on, making up a total of 15 different focal lengths, ranging from 12mm to 150mm.

In development for three years by an international team of prominent optical and mechanical lens designers (anonymous sources point to alumni of Panavision, Leitz, Leica Canada, as well as involvement by Otto Nemenz and Band Pro), it was one of the industry’s best kept secrets. Even Film and Digital Times was in the dark. Three focal lengths were shown today as working prototypes. Band Pro will be the exclusive worldwide dealer. A service facility will be set up in Hollywood.

The small size and light weight were made possible by use of double aspheric elements and titanium mount. The entire set of “Mystery Primes” have focus scales in the same position relative to the front of the camera, common size and location of focus and iris rings, and a 95mm threaded lens front. A threaded ring in the rear of the PL mount permits quick and clean mounting of nets."

What badge are we talking about here?

And what is the expected price point of these lenses?

?

?

Do You Leic(a) it? Sorry Michael:001_tongue:

I would think the Leica Cine-Primes would have a faster crap factor than a Ferrari.
It takes a good 60 seconds to get my Ferrari going fast enough for a passenger to crap their pants.
Drop one of these new lenses from camera height and I'd wager you would crap your pants in under 2 seconds.
:auto:

I didn't spot in Matthew's blog that the lenses covered full frame 35. Jonnycom, did they tell you that the whole set would cover FF35?

FF35? You mean 36mm X 24mm? For 12mm through 21mm T1.4, it's unheard of. Is it even physically and economically possible? Can someone clarify before I lose too much sleep tonight?

By the way, where can I find the Band Pro press release?

Than you all for sharing.

About a potential maker of those lenses everything is still in mystery.

Let's speculate:

Focus marks are measured in feet according to Duclos iPhone photos.

- 1. If it's Leica could be more Canadian division ELCAN that makes glass for Panavision Primos (the new Primo series are gorgeous lenses), this option is already out.

- 2. There was one Leica Cinema company in Zurich, CH but right now it is in liquidation process

- 3. Also I heard year ago from one Leica representative in Vienna that they are in process of making cine lenses

and could be that now they try out to sell them through BandPro chain in Hollywood that is a part German company anyway.

Leica camera AG already have a good reputation of making titanium enclosure for some of M series lenses:

- 4. Then could be that somebody re-designed the old Astro Berlin cine lenses (this speculation is out of the game also).

Here it comes the answer:

PRESS RELEASE:

BAND PRO OFFERS NEW SET OF 4K “MYSTERY PRIME” LENSES

At the One World on HD event, Band Pro introduces a groundbreaking new brand of ultra-high performance PL mount prime lenses,
designed to deliver optical performance for true 4K imaging and beyond.

After three years of design and prototyping, the new T1.4 lenses, still code named “Mystery Primes” within Band Pro, are fully developed
and 3 focal lengths are due to be demonstrated on the F35 camera at the event. The series of prime lenses, available exclusively worldwide
from Band Pro, will eventually total 15 different focal lengths, ranging from 12mm to 150mm. Delivery of production models of eight of the
lenses will begin in early summer of 2010.

“A unique use of aspheric technology and cutting-edge mechanical cine lens design provides the “Mystery Primes” with unmatched evenness
of illumination across the entire 35mm frame and into the corners with no discernable breathing” said Michael Bravin, Chief Technologist of Band Pro.
“Suppression of color fringing into the farthest corners of the frame is superior to any lenses I have ever seen.”

The entire set of “Mystery Primes” features unified distance focus scales, common size and location of focus and iris rings, and a 95mm threaded
(for filters) lens front--all allowing quick interchange of lenses in a busy production environment. Another unique feature is an integrated threaded
net ring in the rear of the PL mount.

Designed to be light in weight yet rugged on the set, the mount and lens barrel are manufactured using lightweight high strength titanium materials.
For example, a typical Mystery Prime weighs just 3 lbs (1.4kg).

The core set of “Mystery Primes”, which will start delivering by June 2010, includes 16mm, 18mm, 21mm, 25mm, 35mm, 40mm, 50mm, 65mm, 75mm,
and 100mm lenses. Additional focal lengths will be delivered in a second phase.

The first 25 sets of lenses will be delivered to Otto Nemenz International. Their experienced team provided invaluable user input from the beginning of the design process.

I was wondering if anyone knows if they are a 'cam' design (S4, MP) or Helical? Their slender design suggests, to my lay understanding, that they are probably helical?

"share a unified distance scale" I find this very impressive and don't understand how this is possible..

Michael

Jacek, you have just unleashed the Sanjin. Standby for oversized images and more colored links than you can possibly imagine.

Go Sanjin... go Sanjin... it's your b-day!

The focus marks you can see in the pic are just a window on the material.
The focus rotation is almost 360 degrees.
And the focus mark is actually pretty small, I think the camera in my iPhone wasn't too sharp and is deceiving. Also remember these are small to begin with. Not much larger than a Super Speed.

Fan-freaggin-tastic. I guess I didn't look long enough. Those are all deep distances, so I guess the marks go all the way around!

Leica?! FF35 all the way wide?!

Even if the super wides vignette at FF35 who cares... well... what the heck is the (RENTAL) price anyway?

I guess this has to be Leica, cause they are putting their small form factor mojo into these huh? Double aespherical? Interesting.
This looks like a FF35 Epic wet dream come true.

The focusing is a cam design and the feel is more S4 like than Ultra Prime like.
This is the only conventional way to make identical focus scales possible..
