It has already been stated that the new "Bomb" (Subject to TSA approval) EVF will be heated to improve its ability to function properly at sub zero celsius temperatures.

Will the new touchscreen LCDs have an improved ability to function at lower temperatures as well?

Please don't do that.

Nothing has been said about that, but the current LCDs hold up pretty well in the cold. It has to be pretty darn cold before they start having troubles. Seems like around -9°F/-22°C for me and a heat pack on the back side solves it.

I can't wait to get my mitts on a Bomb EVF.

I've held off on the VF while waiting for the Bomb...I use the 7" LCD and it works just fine...a bit different way of working behind the lens, but like Jeff I would love the Bomb.

And if you know anything about Winnipeg and winter, you know we're a good testing ground for any film gear against the elements.

Probably the same ones. I use the HeatMax ones - typically they're orange. I buy the bulk packs at Wal-Mart.

The new EVF is no longer called the Bomb, it is called the RED SIGHT, so no more TSA worries. At least that is what was on the side of some of the most recent display EVF's.

When did you see this? RED Sight was the name around the time of the October announcement but it was changed to the BOMB EVF by the time of the November one. Has it been changed since?

Anyway, I'd personally be surprised if people had problems with security with the thing... I mean, even a five year old could see that it had nothing to do with explosives.

But I bet if it has been changed to RED Sight, we'll see a thread about people being worried that TSA people will think it's part of a gun or something...

While recent shots show the "Red Sight" name cast in to the side of the EVF, I also believe I've seen that a long time ago on some renditions as well.

There are several iterations of many accessories floatng around.. I wouldn't take that as gospel until you hear it from the Red boys.

I hope the touch screen is pressure sensitive rather than electro static. It would suck to constantly have to put your gloves off when its cold. Hopefully all the controls will work from the REDMote as well.

Peace,
Darren

P.S. Hoochie Mamas

Certain types of gloves will work anyway. You can also use a stylus for electrostatic display. I understand Darren's concern though. It's cold here a significant portion of the year. But I still vote for electrostatic as they are more accurate and capable than a pressure-sensitive interface.

I asked a while back if the new touchscreens would work with a stylus, as my large, cumbersome fingers are capable of pressing several keys at once on an iPhone, no matter how dainty I try to be. Never heard a response from Red, so I guess we'll see....

There is a stylus for iPhone that's about 4 quid here so I guess either way that RED went there would be ways in which you could interact with the device...

There's a material that you can saw onto the tip of your gloves (or make a whole glove from) that is capable of working with the iPhone screen and well with any iPod device...so if RED did the same as the iPhone sort of touch screen you'd be good to go...

Unless its multi-touch though I'm guessing it'd be pressure sensitive...
