In the last few months I've had the pleasure of helping/testing for the folks over at 3ality Technica (formerly Element Technica) on getting their EVF mount fully meshed and rocking with my EPIC and Bomb EVF and Mantis rig. My obsession has been getting my rig fully shouder-balanced for hand-held work (using my Mantis rig) with the EVF perfectly aligned yet also with the ability to tweak and finesse very quickly on-set. I've been so annoyed by all the forward weighted rigs popping up these days that stress the operators arms - its sort of been my crusade to get my rig just right.

Happy to say that 3T nailed it. The new pieces they've come up with (which should be on sale soon I believe) totally allow for easy and fast adjustment. The new pieces probably weigh less than the old pieces (just a guess) and make the EPIC/Bomb EVF/Mantis combo my top pick for hand-held work.

Here are some pics - snapped quickly during a shoot last week (granted I have on an Easy Rig in the pics but you get the idea - i'll try to post some with the Mantis soon.) Suffice to say the Director I was working with already wants these new pieces for his Epic.

Thanks again to Stephen, Tyson and all the folks over at 3ality Technica for all of your awesomeness!

So is it basically just a longer rail and re-designed EVF mounting plate?

M

Yep - that's right. But they really make difference for EPIC set-up.

Can you still use any of the old ET parts?

The tube clamp, tube & shoe, clutch & snowman remain. The BOMB bracket is new and is now dovetailed which eliminates the 7" dovetail. The shorter dovetail is now 8" long. Its literally only two pieces that are new.

Damn it......just bought the ET Bomb EVF adapter plate........if I'd known.....how soon will it be up for grabs.....?
I do need one though
Looks like a great addition to the existing system, I do love the 3T stuff.......solid & totally pro.

Cheers
Paul

Not to downplay this announcement - but I have been using a new EVF holder that integrates to your old element technica or your "new" element technica, or uses its own base but adds some serious capabilities heretofore unseen with a digital eyepiece bracket.

Should be announced before February.

Looks good. ET, now 3ality, has NEVER let me down. Saved my butt (well, mostly my back) VERY early on by getting me a prototype Mantis for a big handheld shoot I had years ago. They sent it before I'd even paid for it and I was nobody to them. Awesome guys to work with!
Recently I casually emailed a question in on a Saturday morning about a power cable and had reponses from three different people until they were assured I had my answer that same DAY. I ordered the cable and it was shipped by Monday. I was amazed. I love those guys.

Joey, I adore the variable tension knob, but sometimes I find myself wanting it outside the EVF to push the EVF closer to the camera body. As it is now, with my Red One, the knob is between the body and the EVF. The knob can get in the way of ffocus and even mattebox. Really, I love the adjustable tension knob so much I SHOULD say that my mattebox and ffocus get in the way of my ET EVF knob. Problem is, I don't see the locations of the mattebox and ffocus changing much.

Also, sometimes in hheld, I want my face right against the camera body (its ugly so I gotta hide it - my face, no not the camera body). So how can we get this done? You guys are the ones to figure it out.

My R1 is a fully ET pimped out rig. Don't get me started on ET's Burket designed raincover... another overnight shipment that arrived just in time for a exterior Feb. shooting day in Atlanta when we got 4" of rain in one day. Only thing dry was my camera.

3ality rocks.
Best to all,
lael

BTW, Justin I've heard good things about that Birns & Sawyer mattebox. Another awesome company. You happy with it?

Looks good Joey.

When do you expect it to be up in the store - and how much?

It will be up onto the store tomorrow. We just need to take some pics of it to post. Price will be public tomorrow as well. May or myself will post up here when its good to go. Availability is between 2-3 weeks.

Yeah- solid and light. Plays nice w canon primes.

Same here. I want the EVF as close to the camera body as possible for handheld.

And while we're talking about tweeks we'd like to see to this mount:

With the limited real-estate ontop of the Epic, it would be great if the ratchet arm that holds the transverse bar was just a bit smaller. We've gone with a solution where we mount the Red Handle backwards (so its sort of facing forwards) and this lets us use it without interfering with the ET mount, but a little extra clarence would be great! (actually, something like the little arm that's on the red top handle itself).

Hey Lael!

If you would like to try this new model, I can send you a demo unit for a couple of days. The longer dovetail gives you a lot more play than the one that was designed for the Red One. You can have the Bomb EVF really close to the camera, specially in hand-held mode.

Let me know ;)

If all goes well, I look forward to playing with mine later this week.

Thanks for all your help, May.

Just to confirm ... Tthe original EVF extension arm and EVF leveling rod still work well with this smaller EVF mount ... right?

Hi Peter! ;)

I am hoping to get the last part this week and then I am going to ship yours.

And you are going to keep the Clutch and the Rod & Foot parts. You will be replacing the 5" dovetail with the Epic Dovetail and the 7" dovetail with the Bomb Interface. Makes sense?

I'll be happy to get it whenever it's ready.

Since I never had the honor of owning the older EVF mount, I probably wouldn't even recognize the difference in piece size.

The two items I wanted to double check compatibility on are:

The ET EVF Extension:

The ET Eyepiece Leveler:

They will both work with this new smaller mount ... right?
