  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

If you throw in an extra stop or so of dynamic range and clean up the noise a little, while continuing to improve color science, power management and add features, I'd be forever grateful.

If that were all done for $3K or less, I think I'd feel pertty good about it.

Terry whats up with 24fps and 48fps?, it is still lackning 1-2 frames=)

This sounds like what will happen. RED has always said they are in the business of making professional cameras. No need to keep the Scarlet and also RED One around when it was created just to fill a certain price point and performance level that has now been exceeded. My guess is that the new landscape will be EPIC MX and EPIC Dragon. With EPIC Dragon being around the same current price of 34 to 38k for body. The EPIC MX will be around 25K (or cheaper) and have a path for current Scarlet users to upgrade to it. My guess is a 10k discount towards the EPIC MX body.... similar to the Stage 2 and Stage 3 deal. With Stage 2 being around a 5k discount and you can keep your Scarlet.

If the Scarlet was allowed to exist you would have too much cameras... Scarlet, EPIC MX, EPIC Dragon and EPIC Monstro soon. Obviously the low end camera has to increase in Specs... and the next spec upgrade would logically be to EPIC MX. This stage upgrade program will likely start in the middle of next year.

Andrae, your assumption seems to ignore that "Scarlet will have a way to Dragon" so the upgrade to MX doesn't really fit into that idea. I just hope that the offer - no matter what it will be - will stand long enough for me to take advantage of it. Personally I believe that the way to dragon will not mean sending it in and upgrading the body as this seems to be more complicated and more expensive than originally assumed. So I'm with you on the discount or trade-in ideas. Since all this is just plain assumption, I'm pretty certain on one thing: RED will take care of us.

Yes they also said this will be substantially more expensive than upgrading an EPIC to Dragon. My guess is that there will be some bad news in this regard price wise.
 
True that! I'm pretty sure that price wise this will not be the thing to hope for. If all this speculation wouldn't be so over-exciting I would just try to relax because "everything is subject to change". It's just so hard to relax ;) As I said I still believe they have our back.
 
i will make a wild guess , the epic brain will go for 21000, 31000 with meltzer module
the scarlet will be discontinued in 1st of January with ability to upgrade for 9999 to epic brain
 
To join the joy of speculation, I would say that the price difference for the EPIC-X from last year will be matched. 2011 it was $27.5K for the body. That's a $7K difference to today. Since Jim made such a big announcement out of it I would assume that it could be even bigger than that although in my eyes a 7K price drop IS substantial although it seems that a lot of people on here would disagree. To continue I wouldn't guess that it will be a reduction of over $10K. Think about it: the difference between an EPIC and a SCARLET body is about $25K and that should be mostly for ASIC and board difference. So it's doubtful that the price of the body will be drop below that difference. And $25K would match the price of the R1 MX which would EOL it's sales. Hey, even a smaller price drop to $29K is substantial in my eyes.

I guess to sum it up I predict that they will at least change the starting number of the price from a 3 to a 2.

EPIC-X body $25-27.5K

Here's what I think will happen, from what I understand of the issues upgrading Scarlet to Dragon, and the differences of Scarlet and Epic.

Scarlet is gone, leaving current owners with the ability to upgrade to Dragon via Epic.

Epic-X Brain will run somewhere from $12-18K, at least 25% step up from the Scarlet, to cover the Non-Binned components that keep the Scarlet running, which I believe is the only big difference between the two.

And as far as Red One, I think they'll keep a few stashed away just for "Legacy Users" who want to use them over Epic.

I'm not sure, it's a long shot, but it makes sense to me and the people I have talked to.
