  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Epic X Price Prediction

Red ONE MX rented so fast I made doubled my investment. Epic rented so slow I sold them as soon as Scarlet was announced. I bought a Scarlet and HATED it and sold that too.

I wish Scarlet would die an ignobale death. The RED ONE is by far a superior camera and value and I hope to hell Terry is right in that Scarlet NEVER gets the Dragon sensor. EPIC is and should be EPIC!

Exactly my experience!!
R1 may be old and heavy, but sure made money. Epic is way better camera, but Alexa stole the show here for me.

Pretty sure it's tomorrow...could be wrong though as there were a few conflicting reports.

The question is really if a Scarlet can be brought all the way up to the specs of Dragon and, if so, can it be done cost effectively. All we know about the thing called Dragon is that it is 6K rez, a sensor size of approximately 30 x 16 mm, and will give a couple more stops of dynamic range. The rest is unknown to us mere mortals. There has been no report from RED what a Scarlet Dragon might look like - or if there even will be a such a "second tier" Dragon.

So, if Scarlet has to get brought all the way to the level of THE Dragon - what will that process entail and can it be made cheaper than just replacing the camera entirely. Because if a Dragon is $30K and it costs $28K to upgrade a Scarlet, is it worth it?

OTOH, if there is to be a second level Dragon, the cost of getting Scarlet to that level is, obviously, entirely depeendent on what "that level" actually is. We don't know that and even Jarred's comment from a couple days ago seems to hint that RED isn't quite sure yet either.

So, we wait in excited anticipation...

I was excited four years ago when I heard about the FF monstro sensor specs. .. not so excited now.. four years later i have an mx sensor (a by product of the r1 upgrade path) ..and may soon be offered a Dragon.

..but Dragon is not FF, nor is it a true monstro sensor apparently., and the competition is awakening.. how many months Dragon is king is uncertain, as Sony announces 4k sensors with global shutters and 16bit raw output..

yesterday i extracted a CFA from a Blackmagic DNG file using in house code and algorithms, debayered it at full resolution (@2432x1366, not 2400x1350 cropped res.) and applied some custom curves and followed that with a high quality 1080p downsample.. that excited me. Actually getting my hands on sensor values directly, lossless / uncompressed sensor values..that excited me (even though the current batch of test files had the white balance baked in..which will change apparently), because soon there will be affordable, uncompressed 4k+ CFAs at our disposal.. ;)

I believe the announcement was on 31st but available to order in red store Nov 1st. I could be wrong. I have to go back through all threads to find it.

Edit: Found where Jim mentioned 31st. Said everyone would own an Epic after Nov 1st.

One less day to have to be in suspense.

My expectations are that anyone who doesn't own an EPIC will after Nov. 1st.

Jim

So much speculation when JJ has already spelled it out. Read the post carefully.

It would be impossible to ship all the Epics by Nov 1st to those who want them...
The only way possible is if you already have one... a Scarlet, upgradeable to EPIC affordably.

Scarlet ends.

They have perfected the manufacture of EPIC's, Scarlet existed because of imperfect manufacturing so why continue?

EPIC owners will be offered very generous upgrade to Dragon.

RED philosophy.

Naaaah, later he said that if you want to cancel your battle tested scarlet and buy an epic, it would be a considerably higher investment.

Which could mean that if you hold on to your Scarlet and follow the upgrade path to Epic, it will be considerably cheaper! I think Ash is onto something.

SOOOOO T minus how many hours before the update is posted? He said the 31st..... and Nov 1st goes into effect.... I wonder WHEN he posts it lol...

I like Ash's post, but it sounds almost too good to be true. Although, and I'm basing this solely off of my experience of taking a "Utopia'esque" prediction and seeing it come to fruition in a different way (i.e. Apple products, RED products) something feels right about a $6k upgrade from Scarlet to Epic..

It's one board, right? A board that has had it's R&D costs paid for.. so, how much could they charge for it? What would be fair for a company that doesn't want to make an "obscene" amount of profit.

They should call it the 6 6 6 upgrade.

Someone in this thread has guessed correctly :)
