  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New CS5 Support

So, in what way does 5.02 support RR? I can choose to use RR but it doesn't seem to be doing anything. As matter of fact, I could boot REDCINE-X in the background with RR support on.

Then something is wrong... If RR is on in ppro then Red cine should report an error that the rocket is in use. Any other hints that I can use to help you?

Cheers

Dave

Thanks Dave,

I really appreciate your presence in the forum.

RR is working fine with REDCINE-X, the driver/firmware is the most current, the REDLINE is the latest (probably that doesn't concern for Adobe).

RR is in the CI design's PCIe expansion chassis connected to Mac Pro, but I don't think there should be any compatible issue with that.

Kaku,

While using Premiere with a Mobile Rocket kit on a 17" MacBook Pro, REDcine-x on load reports a warning "RED rocket is already in use by another application." When you press OK on the warning dialog you see that the RED Rocket icon is still lit. I haven't attempted simultaneous playback in both software though. It would be awesome in Premiere if there was a visual cue to show the RR in use.

I did notice on exiting REDCine-X that playback in Premiere was not realtime anymore. I had to relaunch Premiere to get RR support.

Hey Andrae,

See in my case is that Premiere is seeing the RR (because I can choose it) but it seems not accelerating anything. RR is not supposed to be available for multiple application unless you have multiple RR installed, but I see your point which is strange but there seems to be a indication of REDCINE-X is switching the RR support on Premiere. I will tray that, thanks.

Kaku,

Did your copy of Premiere revert back to trial license? Are you still able to load RED presets? I would uninstall Premiere and start all over again.

The new RED support is build in the new upgrade. So if you still have the old files from the Adobe Lab in some folders, that might cause some of the problems described here.

Frank

I don't remember installing Adobe/RED stuff in my new Mac Book Pro, but it's worth checking, thanks.

Tried what Andrae mentioned, booting for Premiere then boot RCX next and now RCX says it's used by another application. Premiere shows somewhat accelerated playback. Now I'm going to see if it helps to render faster.

Does export utilize the RED Rocket Card for rendering? I noticed the CPU on my MacBook Pro is around 85% capacity on all four cores while rendering. a 4:55 sec timeline takes 23 minutes to render out to Apple Pro Res 4444 1620x1080 from 4.5k footage. Is it safe to say that rendering is not supported off the RED Rocket card?

I'm getting RT playback at 1/2 res with the Mobile Rocket kit in Premiere Pro 5.0.2. This is quite surprising that in Premiere Pro my playback is faster than in REDCine-X Build 262 which I only can get 1/4 res sustained playback with the RED Rocket Card via Mobile Rocket. Anyone else using a PCI-express extender on a laptop getting similar results?

Well the rocket will accelerate the decode of the R3D files but we will still compress prores on the cpu so that doesn't sound incorrect.

David,

Thanks a lot for your response. Does this also explain why Adobe Media Encoder takes 5x longer to do the same render due it having to debayer the footage without the RED Rocket Card?

Yeah we didn't have time to get the source settings dialog working in AME so no ui for turning it on.... I can probably give you a text file to edit that would get rocket on in AME but I haven't had time to test it. You would need to run AME before PPRo however as the rocket only allows one client...

Cheers

David,

I would love to know how to turn it on. Please PM me any info or email to andrae at facetmedia dot com. I love using AME that way I'm free to do continued edits in Premiere. Congrats on the new update... FCP is seeming like a thing of the past right now... I'm a switcher.

Hi David,

your private messages are flowing over, so may I ask you from here for that text file too?

please mail to uli dot plank at hbk-bs dot de.

BTW, having you here so active on this list is another part of the excellent Adobe CS5 experience!

Yep, similar on mine.

Put the file in ~/Library/Preferences/Adobe/Adobe Media Encoder/5.0/

something similar on windows. This will set AME to use 1 rocket. Please let me know if it works. I don't have a rocket right now another developer has it. Remember you can't have an app using the rocket already if you want to test this.

So, far with Mac Book Pro with RR, it does not playback full debayer with Premiere Pro. Even RCX doesn't for the desktop. It only provides full debayer playback from the RR output. 1/2 resolution would be realistic and as long as it supports fast encoding.

Thanks, David.

Our RR should be out of customs any day now.

David,

Thank you very much for doing this and making it available... so valuable your assistance to this community.

Yep, similar on mine.

Strange that on a MacBook Pro with RED Rocket we can get 1/2 res playback in Premiere Pro and not REDCine-X. Is it due to the 64 bit nature of Premiere Pro? It's really incredible... just happy that it's working. I am only getting 1/4 res playback in REDcine-X.... which really sucks considering that it's a mobile rocket kit.
