I'm brand new to Red, I really like this forum.

I've just shot two spec TV projects on Red unaware that my G5 won't run Red Alert. So I'm biting the bullet and investing in a new CPU. I need to hover around the minimum requirements for economic reasons, and am wanting to get input. I'm thinking about a Mac Pro, desk top unit, 2.66 quad core, 3 G ram, and I think a VideoForce GT 120 video card. Will that drive a 1080p edit smoothly?

Many thanks in advance for the benefit of your expertise.

If Color is of importance to you, get an ATI card, it's more important than the CPU(s).

And get some more RAM, transcoding will be much faster. You don't need to buy it from Apple, there are dealers with far cheaper RAM, but nevertheless certified for the MacPro.

and don't sacrifice cores for clock speed. 8 multithreaded cores is infinitely faster than 4 cores with a few hundred mhz more speed. not to mention cheaper too.
