Just got to play with a couple new primes. The Pancro 100mm T2.8 great size, and beautiful projected. It is a very sharp lens, I would say as sharp as S4. I was kind of hoping for something more like an old Pancro in this lens. The 75mm 5i T1.4 . Sharper than an 75mm S4 wide open at T1.4 . Though heavier than S4 the light up focus scale is really cool.

I was quoted 33K (US) for a set of 5. Have set on order. Yes the Cooke 5/i 21K/per lens.

I haven't decided if I like the retro '80s gold styling of the new 5i's... They look like nice lenses though. I'm eager to rent a set and see what's up. At $21K per lens, I won't be buying a set...

Is it me, or does it seem like Cooke really missed the mark with these lenses? If they were all T2.4 or T2.6 I might see them as interesting. However, considering the RED Primes are all T1.8, and are beautiful beautiful lenses, it seems like for $10k more all you are getting is a few lenses at T1.4 and the name Cooke.

Let's just say I am more than happy with the RED primes and by far they are the best deal on the market currently.

Cooke didn't miss any marks or do anything incorrect. These are professional lenses.
These are meant for shooting feature films with a large budget. Rental houses will buy these lenses and maybe a few private owners here and there. But I have no problem with Cooke making superb optics and charging a premium for them.
Cooke is like Porsche, Very well built and a little pricey, but once you're successful, it's a no brainer.

i agree with matthew. the ability to match the whole cooke line is genius. different lenses for different environments and budgets, all cooke optics that will match. if you are shooting with a long optimo anyways, you would be lighting to 2.8, which will work perfectly with these new cookes.....

I'm sorry, I was thinking of Pancrons and not these new 5 series T1.4 lenses. These are meant to compete with the Master Primes and I am sure they will.

I think anyone who makes a set of "cheap" primes that are not at least across the board the same T stop are wasting their time. Light speed is one of the advantages of primes. If you aren't going to give me speed, I'll just stay on a zoom and be able to move faster.

Cooke don't miss the boat, they are the boat.

About Panchro, why only T2.8 ? This is strange for prime lens. And also what is the lens coverage ? 32mm ? Good for Epic 5K and above ?

Because they already make lens sets that are T1.4 & T2 so a T2.8 set means that you can have the Cooke look and quality for less.

They're not a company just coming in to the market with a limited range of lenses.

right beside me is a 40 year old panchro with t2.1...

Look at it from Cookes point of view. They already have a Legendary set of glass in the S4's, why would they make another set of T2 glass?

The 40 year old panchros you refer to, are a very unique look and not everybodys cup of tea. They flare quite easily and might i add create beautiful flares at that. They are not computer designed.

The new panchros will have new coatings, will be computer designed, will be sharper than the old panchros wide open. Even though cooke are marketing them as the new panchros with the classic look, i imagine the look will be very different from the original mid century glass.

Which of coarse means there will still be plenty of work out there for my century 2000 Panchro set...happy days.
