Hey,

I am in the process of conforming and color correcting a project we've shot with Build 18 still. I'd like to work it through the new color science though...

We've edited so far using ProRes proxies and now I am going back to the R3D files, but wanted to take those through the new color science first...

So what I've done so far is: Went from FCP XML to clipfinder, conformed the XML, replaced prores with proxies -> put it back to FCP, and wanted to roundtrip it through Color, but am not sure that the new color science is applied. Would I have to go through every clip in clipfinder, open it in RedAlert, rebalance the white balance and save the quicktimes again?

thanks for any help, cheers Xax

After some research I've found out that it's not possible to use the new color science with old files if I go raw through Color 1.5 at all. Bummer. So I have to render to ProRes first, eh?

I've just loaded up in FCP an old B17 project

drag some proxies to the timeline and send to color

in 1.5 all is fine have access to red tab etc..

Not totally understanding the issue. Are you saying the clips dont show up at all ?

Si

No, I get all the tabs, the problem is that they are not using the new color science, because of the outdated codec (SDK?) that Color uses.

I believe that although we have had an updated Color plugin for FCS 3, we are still waiting for a further update to incorporate the new colour science. In my experience, currently Color 1.5 with REDCODE framework 2.9 (dated 27th March, so pre-dating the new colour science) is still using the old colour science, whatever build the footage was shot with. There seems to be some confusion over this though.

It's funny (odd) how we can't get clarification on this. Also can 1.5 handle mixed 2k and 3k properly?
Color 1.5 uses the old color science, it can handle well 2k/3k/4k mixed together but IMHO the best way for now is to output from clipfinder/redalert/redrushes/redicine (all softwares that use the new color science) redlog prores 4, redlog dpx files or redlog proresHQ then import them into Color and grade and output to prores 4 or dpx.
You can use Clipfinder to replace prores proxy with prores 4 or proresHQ and then send them to Color.

Clip finder doesnt give the option for Prores 4444 though :(

Whats log and transfer using? Old CS also?

s

My Clipfinder does ;-)
This is the reason why I'm saying to use dpx or proresHQ if you can't output to prores 4.
I think the new Clipfinder, Redalert and Redrushes will come out publicly soon.
