This camera is looking pretty awesome in the DLSR crop category. It's got 12.2MP CMOS DIGIC III 14-bit RAW with a 3-inch Live View LCD and a few other nice little additions.

For us timelapse guys, this means full 4K+ resolution (4272 x 2848 pixels) and compatibility with EF and EF-S lenses. The batteries are totally different from previous XT models, so you will need to buy new batteries, a new battery grip, etc.

I wonder, though, if packing all those pixels into such a small sensor will cause noise and heat issues, especially with long exposures at night?

live view is in the 40d. the major drawback is that it doesn't autofocus (unless it's different in the xsi).

does anyone know the difference between the xsi and the 40d? i hope there is one... i'll feel bad for buying the 40d. :(

yeah i feel bad for 40D people. :( a lot of people, even members here, have been snapping up the 40D. the resolution is the major difference I see. i think the 40D has a more solid body, and maybe some more functions.

yeah, i was thinking of better seals... but still... i hate to buy technology because of this. The great thing is... I don't see Red being like this. all the advancements that are made continues to be on the same very camera we're buying. rendering obsolecense obsolete.

It's SD card also.

Don't feel sorry for us 40D guys, I've played with the XSi and whilst a good camera, those 12MP do make the image noisier (check the samples on DPReview). It also misses a lot of small features that the 40D has and is generally in line with its price when it comes to overall quality etc compared to the 40D.

If it was purely megapixels, then 1D MkIII owners would be crying too, right? :)

how different is canon 5D from xsi 450D? and what is the price range we are looking at?

really? cool. :)

speaking of weeping owners, i would highly advise AGAINST getting a 5D right now, because its replacement is almost certainly coming soon.

visceral, i didn't really see any low-light samples on dpreview. is the camera rumored to be noisy in low light? compared to the xt? xti?

even the new full-frame canon 1dsm3 has so many pixels crammed onto its sensor i wonder about noise.

It's got a mirror yet? Oh gee. I wanted a prism for some reason.

Old news isn't it? Oh well, better late than never.

I can't wait for the 5D Mark II.

40d is still superior compared to the 450. Higher quality of the sensor, depth of color and quality of the body (waterproof) etc.

Any idea on the framerates this can sustain compared with the 40D?

I'm not far from buying a 40D to replace the 350D, but the big plus for me with that would be 1fps sRAW sequences. Looks like a new batteries and grip either way..... any other pluses and minuses between the 40D and 450D?

The 40D is hardly waterproof as far as I know. The 5D isn't fully sealed (some weather proofing) and the 40D isn't either.

If I'm incorrect, please correct me.

Regarding FPS, the Canon site for the 450D claims: "Excellent performance with 3.5 fps continuous shooting, up to 53 full-resolution JPEGs or 6 RAW images in a burst, and reduced shutter lag time."

Sounds good. I wonder if it can sustain 1fps or 2fps RAW indefinitely, for long timelapse sequences.

I've only the 350D experience to compare with, but I have a fairly common occurrence where it'll shoot happy enough at 1 jpeg frame each 3 seconds or so, for maybe 200 frames, and then miss one and then pick up and carry on OK.....Anoying!

I'm 95% likely to go with the 40D..... as long as it is consistent on the sRAW rates it's all I need anyhow......

...Oops, indeed you are right. The body of the 40d is sealed like the 5d. Which means you can shoot in some bad weather conditions. Of course you wouldn't want to take it for a swim  , but with a 5d or a 40d you can shoot in dust, rain, snow, I know I did and like the 5d the 40d did great ... No sand or moist in the camera, no cracking buttons or other malfunctions, nothing... I really wouldn't advise trying it with a plastic 400/450 series.

Of course i agree the new 5d would probably be the better choice, but if you would be upgrading from a hobby DSLR, this would be the time to buy an "old" 5d. A fantastic camera and with the new one coming up you can get one for a great price !!

About the 1DsMark III.... The first time I worked with it I was stunned about the picture quality, low noise and the colors. Personally I would prefer the 1DsmIII Canon to for instance the Mamiya ZD....

Yeah, even if you are not going to buy the new 5D replacement, by waiting for it come out, the old 5D will become very cheap to buy on ebay or craigslist.

Hey don't think the 350/400/450Ds are wimpy. I leave my 350D out shooting all night in the mountains and deserts and the freezing cold, cranking away three or hundred long exposures per night, and it hasn't let me down yet... knock on wood. :) I just use a simple cloth sleeve to cover it.
