  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

new Canon 24-70 vs new Tamron 24-70 with IS?

The Tamron 24-70mm has been out for a while now has anyone used it on an Epic successfully? Does the IS work? Thanks in advance

I have it on the canon mount and iris control works perfect. I actually never tested the auto focus, so I can't say as I never use it. As far as vc goes, it seems to switch on and do something, but I don't know how much. To me it looks like it's doing something, but I have to turn it off and back on every time I start and stop record.

Rumor is Canon has decided to release an IS 24-70, no word of whether it will supplement or replace the 24-70 II but given their penchant for having 87 lenses at every focal length I wouldn't be surprised if they keep selling both.

I read your whole post in the voice of Dr. Evil given your usage of penchant.

I use the Tamron. The VC is not supported (to my knowledge) yet. The iris does work fine though. No problems there. The zoom is really really sticky. Got it the month it was released and it still sticks. As long as you are not doing a zoom shot, it works fine. All in all, its decent. The VC when used on something like a 5D3, its really nice to have. On RED, there are not many benefits over the Canon. The Canon is better….but at a much higher price point. Having a choice to do it again…I'd go Canon.

I wish Red would support this lens. I love to have a 2.8 27-70 with is. Im not really interested in the canon at all. Is is to good to not have.

The image of the Tamron is fairly on par with the Canon…and its less expensive…so thats nice. The sticky zoom is very annoying…but can be worked around. If RED would work the compatibility with the VC….then it would be a no brainer. I would, hands down, pick it over the Canon at that point. So the short of it is…the mechanics are not great, the VC does not work yet…but the iris does and the image is nice.

RED request: Please hook up the VC with this one. Would be very nice to have.

Necro-post again! What is the verdict on this one now? Is VC supported? (looking for a decent all-purpose lens with IS)

+1. I'm about to buy this lens for my S-W because of the VC. Please confirm it works (fingers crossed).

Exactly the same boat! I was gunna go down the route of the Sigma 50-100mm 1.8 in April but lack of IS makes me hesitant at that focal length
