  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

new Canon 24-70 vs new Tamron 24-70 with IS?

Interested in this as well...

Damn - looks like early July http://www.canon.co.uk/About_Us/Pre...ales_start_dates_for_EOS-1D_X_EF_24-70mm.aspx

Maybe they decided to add IS?

This was going to be my only lens for the Scarlet that I'll have within two weeks - so I'm I'm perplexed as what to do?

I only own a 'Sigma 28-105 3.8/5.6 UC-III Aspherical for EOS camera' that's about 10 years old.

Maybe I can hope against hope that it will work until the 24-70 ships? As it worked on my Canon Rebel (which certainly didn't plan for it to work), I'm curious why it might not work on the Scarlet?

I was pretty disappointed to see that the new Canon 24-70 telescopes with zoom. That feature alone would have made me inclined to update, let alone the supposedly improved optics. But I can't see myself spending the dough on it when it ignores the biggest weakness IMO of the original model.

Tamron has setup a site for their new lens:

Anyone care to comment on the new Canon 24-70 vs the Tamron 24-70?

With the things that are missing from the new Canon, I'm wondering if I should wait on my order, and if I'd really be that un-happy with the Tramron, which has IS, and wait until Canon brings out something more feature complete?

The Tamron 6 year warranty is nice compared to Canon's 1 year.

One further question. Will the Tamron even work with the RED, or must they make some changes in firmware? I don't quite get why my Canon DLSR can deal with a lens that it doesn't know about, but the RED camera seem to have to be set up in advance for each lens?

That's an excellent question, and one I'd be interested in a technical answer for from someone from RDC: I can slap any lens with the appropriate mounting on any other camera and it Just Works; why does my EPIC need updated firmware and individual characterisation for each lens - what is it doing or trying to do that's different, or achieved using some radically different technology?

Jarred?

Here are some comparisons between the Canon 24-70 and the new Tamron 24-70, showing how amazing the VC (IS) is on the Tamron.

This shows auto-focus speed comparisons. The Canon was a bit faster

All I can say is ... damn!

I'd like to get an official word from RED if they are going to characterize this lens - and the timeframe, or there's really no point.

Are there any resources on the net that have done testing of the new Canon 24-70mm? I have only found basic info on this lens.

The reason I was holding for the Canon 24-70 II was for the hope it would have IS. Since it was announced it didn't have IS my interest for this lens vanished. Now this Tamron is exactly what I wanted! IS is essential for that range when working without a tripod- unless you want the shaky cam look...

Tamron sounds like a viable option to the Canon. Though Canon has delayed the release it does not really matter. The Tamron probably will not work with RED until they set it up. I am sure they will have plenty on their plate with the new firmware release. The Canon will probably work out of the gate...I hope. I would get the Tamron now but there is no way of knowing how the camera would react. My rep confirmed that its so new it has not been tested yet. If it was confirmed I would jump on it. If not...might as well wait and see if Canon smartens up and gets that big trombone out of there and slaps some IS on that thing.

The old 24-70 was used to shoot a lot of good video.

The Tamron tests better than the old 24-70.

But ... it's useless unless RED characterizes it.

So, if you are interested, open a ticket. I did, but the response underwhelmed me.

This is the only 24-70 with IS (unless Canon's delay is due to adding IS ... seems doubtful, as it would be a complete re-tooling), so ... I hope that RED can be persuaded to put this on their priority list - as it will add value to the camera.

The Canon will probably work out of the gate...I hope.

Actually, we'll be in the same boat with the Canon 24-70 II. It will need to be characterized, so ... I hope RED has a staff member whose only function is to characterize Canon compatible lenses, especially those that stand out and are not from Canon.

BTW - what's the current list of compatible lenses? Is it this:

All the tests I have seen are using the mk1 canon 24-70mm as a comparison and I am not surprised that the new Tamron can challenge this older design. I would love to see some serious testing of the new mk2 Canon 24-70mm but I suppose that very few exist outside Canon.

The original Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L was a lens almost exclusively made to the requests of the Photojournalists world wide, and as most of you will know, photojournalist don't care much about Super Sharp glass, they care about the perfect range in a zoom, and they want accurate autofocus, and fast autofocus.

The new Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II is supposed to have faster Autofocus and be also much sharper then the first one.

Be careful in going too fast on Tamron lenses, as they have quite some quality control issues and you might find yourself with a lens that needs to go back.

No one has officially tested the new Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II.

But what is that you must know is that the Canon 24-70 is the most favorite zoom lens for every Photo journalist for their range and Fashion photographers for the particular look that this lens give its images.

If you need a 24-70 now, well but the Canon version one, preferably used as it will save you few hundred dollars that you will not loose when selling in few months ot switch to the version II if it does turn out to be really as much better as anticipated.

If you want the Image Stabilization, try out the Tamron, just be sure to test it at various ISO and apertures on a chart, to insure you have a good copy.

Anyone using the tamron? I know this is an old thread but I was wondering if is was working and how it compared to canons 24-70. Any compatability issues? Thanks.

Pretty cool and informative site... No one knows if these tamrons (I'm looking at the 70-200 as well) work with the Scarlet/Epic? Does the IS function? Do you at least get iris control and focus confirmation? The IS is a nice to have and not a deal breaker. It would be really nice, but I am trying to explore other options than the Canon offerings at the same focal lengths. Thanks.
