  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New camera from Sony

I still have both Beta SP and Digibeta camcorders, long ago paid for that to this day earn money.

As Stuart said, this is a pretty smart move as it keeps the 5500/5800 decks alive.

Strange to see Philippe Ros in this Sony video.

Last time I met Philippe Ros I spoke to him about the RED One, this was in January 2008. He told me he would rather stop business than shoot with the RED scam!

First I didn't understand the negative reaction and even emphased the benefit of shooting underwater with a 5000 kelvin sensor. I don't think it is only because he had some special relation to Sony but because RED ONE with their Raw acquisition format kills the vision ingeneer job that is adjusting gamma curves... for the best YUV encoding, and that is his living.

I was very surprised that the Philippe Ros the HD guru didn't wanted to explore this new camera (RED One) and had such a smashing reaction...

Has he changed his mind...? :seeya:

BTW I love the end of the video when Gerhard Baier from Bandpro states "don't wait for the competition come and see us now..."...

PS: what is new in this cam that competitors don't have yet?

HDCAM SR

HDCAM SR

Tape based workflow seems a bit behind the curve.

I think that it's actually one of the main reasons that it would be used / rented. i.e. it's compatible with what's there already.

Then again you could connect any camera head with 4:4:4 RGB output to an HDCAM SR portable deck and you'd have a similar functionality.

Maybe the more significant news was the 40% reduction in HDCAM SR tape stock pricing.

YEAh, you could , but this is the advantage , it records 444 onboard if you'd like and you could have it in 35mm version in the near future. I've always found the f35 with the seperate recorder some kind of a joke going back to the 80's.

Maybe you missed the RED announcements for the October 30 announcement (and the announcement of the Nov 30 announcement?) No countdown timer but thousands of posts by Redusers about it.

well, its not that I forgot.. just had little words to put from cell phone..
I meant changing everything.. not just counting timers.. now after the announcement of sony.. we can say upgrade path? also promoting one of their representetives? the wave effect was strong on how the big companies deals with their customers.. this what Jannard said long time ago "they have to start running"..
people needs more than just a camera.. I thank RED for changing how these companies deal with us..
Of course this forum is a way way beyond what others are doing.. open discussions.. transparency.. fulfiling the needs of users from feature requests to 15K+ users (don't know how much now) technical support and helpdesk through discussion.. more more more...

October 30th wasn't an announcement about an announcement. The Recon thread doesn't announce anything about the 30th of November being another info release date.

People's false expectation led them to believe that the October 30th announcement would include projections on the Scarlet's price/release date. When these expectations weren't met, the RED team only then notified those people that October wasn't all about the Scarlet (although there were a few things mentioned about the Scarlet). Rather they were about the EPIC-X and a few of their accessories.

Philippe and I worked together at the Hannover workshops and have worked together on previous occasions.

He doesn't hate the RED it just doesn't work for what he has been shooting for the last 4 years.

He has needed maximum latitude for shooting underwater sequences that include moves to surface.

Other cameras have a greater contrast handling range than the RED does at present.

He has used the camera appropriate to the job, sensible approach.

I know that he constantly tracks what cameras do what and will undoubtedly be looking at changes coming from RED.

He's a professional and approached the choice of cameras in a cold logical way.

As maybe we all should, horses for courses!

I've always found the f35 with the seperate recorder some kind of a joke going back to the 80's.

So if you did have this camera in a future 35mm 1-chip configuration, just what would be the difference between it and an F35 with docked SRW-1?

Apart from size?

So modularity is a joke???

No , Mr. Mullen.

Modularity is certainly no joke. BUt I've never been to much attracted to the f35 and the d-21 due to the size of these systems. Let alone, if you want to rig them in stereo. Ok, then you could have the recorders somewhere else, but they're still huge compared to how the epic will perform size-wise.

It's just like a fridge that's hanging up there, a smaller recorder could have done it maby.
And there's always the need on the field to be able to shoot without to many ac's I when it's necessary I suppose....

It's not to bad that they seem to do an effort offering a system that's capable of containing the recorder onboard, but I would have preferred another medium.(I thought they will, but need still need to find out more specs.)

maybe we are slightly missing the point here. RED cameras are aimed mainly for filming feature films for cinema and then, for the rest of the stuff.. music videos, documentaries, etc..
the Sony camera is aimed mainly for the broadcasting world (even bigger market than the cinema world), and then for the rest of the stuff.. documentaries, music videos, cinema, etc... somewhere in the middle they merge and compete for the same market.
