Took a look at Canon's new 17-120mm lens at NAB this year. Looks promising, I wrote up a quick overview of this new glass here.

And here is the video sneak peak as a standalone link

$33000 T2.95 17-120 with a removable ENG style servo. This looks sexy. Especially if focus ring has a motor as well as zoom/iris and servo interface is compatible with existing ENG/EFP controllers. Any footage from it yet?

t2.95 i think he said yes? 0:36 in

Great range, great price, ramps and breathes, optically the Fuji beats it, but will be good for run and gun low budget stuff.

Seems no one really has more info or hands-on other than the couple quick NAB tidbit videos on YouTube or the Duclos review. This lens looks like a killer solution for a walk-about EFP/ENG lens. I'm tempted to plunk down my deposit, almost did on day-1 of the pre-order, but I don't expect them to be scarce coming from Canon.

I like the Cabrio, but have never pulled the trigger on the 19-90. It just didn't offer enough reasons for me over my Optimo DP kit. This Canon, OTOH, may just do it with the even greater zoom range and what should translate to better camera communication via the EF mount.

I'm curious to see how well the production model will cover on Dragon.

Have you checked out Jeff's First Look video with the lens when it was announced? He also wrote up a pretty thorough post to go along with it, but if you have any questions, feel free to ask here or in the blog comments (I'm sure Jeff or Andy would be happy to answer  )

Whats nice about the Fuji is you can take off the side grip and you have a nice cinema style zoom with witness marks. We used them in 3d rigs for planet of the apes and they worked well for it. Canon would be good if you don't do any cinema style work as it has a little more range, but no witness marks is a pretty big downside in my opinion. But, I'm sure its meant to target the non-hardline EFP world which is growing fast in the S35 realm. But, if I were buying something I would go with something that could be more versatile. Just depends on what your market is I suppose. Canon has some killer cinema zooms as well….

Hi Chris,

Duclos lenses is planning on a 32 point adaptation, by year end for the Canon.

Thank you very much

Thanks for that, Claire! Somehow I had missed that review. It answered a couple of my questions. I think for me I just need to get my hands on a production unit once available so I can just check it out for myself.

And that's a perfect solution, I think. There are a lot of us who tend to veer more toward EFP style production in many situations and it's not always about having cinema gear. I can see why Canon made several of their design choices. As someone who owns lots of cinema style glass as it is, this is a nice departure and could be a very welcome addition to the kit.

Image circle of 31.7mm - so will crop the Dragon in 6K, but should be fine in 5K considering Dragon is 34.5...

PS: The production version has witness marks on both the operator and AC's side FYI...

How much does this weigh? I love how the 19-90 is so light weight... And it isn't that long considering it's range. And its close focus is really good.

...I also dislike non-constant apertures for some reason.
