  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hi all,

Time has come to upgrade my machine and hoped to get some advice. I'm on a tight budget so I'm keeping ssds, psu, case from my previous one and getting mb, ram, cpu and video card. I'll be using it for some CC on resolve(only small projects, rest is done in post production houses), adobe suite, fusion. My girlfriend will be using it as well, and that's where the plot thickens, she prefers OSX therefore I can't use a pascal gpu, will have to go for a 980 unless drivers come out within the next month-highly unlikely.

Here it goes:

Asus X99a-II
Crucial Ballistix 2666 8gb x 8
Intel i7 5820k

A GTX 980, most likely an EVGA, haven't really looked into it yet.

Without affecting the budget, any reason to switch to a 4 core higher frequency processor like the 6700k or is it better to stay with the 6 core?

Memory seems to be compatible with the mobo. If I'm getting a 6-core processor could I get by with 6 sticks for a total of 48gb or will I see a big difference at 64gb total?

If we ever see a stable OS X compatible driver for Pascal cards like the 1080, then replacing the 980 is probably worth the cost. Until then...

Not sure who you'd have to blow to get Apple and nVidia to make a serious effort to write drivers/Metal API/etc so Pascal cards would shred on OS X. For AdobeCC folks who prefer Macs, it would be a major boost. Perhaps eGPUs over TB3 will develop enough to make hiring the necessary coders worth it to nVidia, but that's probably wishful thinking...

Cheers - #19

You'd get a tad more performance out of the 6700k, but not enough in my opinion to warrant getting it if you already have the other. As for the GPU, the 1080 would certainly have my vote, but there's no denying that the 980 is a fantastic card, so given your compatibility requirements, it would be fine. 980 is still adequate to work with 4k+ online in Premiere.

I tend to put 64gb in the workstations. I rarely see Premiere need more than half that (and most of these projects are massive with all online r3ds) but you can definitely push it beyond that, especially if you start throwing things like Resolve into the mix. But if the cost is an issue, start with 48 and upgrade later if you need to, assuming you'd be using the same size sticks to allow for this.

I haven't bought anything yet so I might consider the 6700k over the 5820k. I'll go for 64gb from the start, price difference isn't that great.

Yeah, I wish drivers existed already, but as you said, the 980 is a great card so I'll be happy anyway:)

Thanks for all the advice!

I'm in the process of buying all my parts for my new build. Mines coming to around $4700 AUS dollars or $3600 US dollars.

CPU - intel i7 6850k
Motherboard - Asus x99 deluxe ii
Ram - G.skill ripjaw v 32gb 2400mhz
GPU - EVGA gtx1080 superclock 8gb
OS ssd - samsung evo 960 pci-e 1tb
2nd ssd - samsung 850 pro 1tb
PSU - corsair 1000w 80plus
Optical bay - LG bluray burner
Case - Corsair Obsidian 750D full atx case

A lot of my projects are simple 5-10min edits with reasonable post deadlines so this setup seems to be a good fit for what i need at this time. A friend that has a similar/slightly lower speced tower than this, says his chops 6k in premiere like butter. So im keen to see how mine performs once its all assembled
