  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Bond Takes a Shot at 4K

Illya,
I want to start by saying that (even though I have yet to work with it) I believe you have an outstanding product. I've followed your DC endeavors since you were a tiny booth at NAB with just some really raw footage. We've used your industrial imaging products and from that experience I can say that you guys make great sensors too.

Even though I own a RED ONE and I absolutely love it (both for its practicality and imaging quality) it would just be irresponsible to not consider the alternatives (be it 35mm, the Origin, or even super8) if it's going to be best for a specific situation. I don't believe in the impossible (I work with Siegfried & Roy so I'd fear for my mental health if I did) but a camera that is best at/for everything comes pretty close to falling in that category in my opinion.

My question for you is that looking at your old rate card; you have an extensive selection of primes but only the Ang. Optimo 24-290 as a zoom option. If I'm not out of place (and I fully understand if you can't freely reveal the outcome of your hard work), may I ask what fueled this decision (e.g.: testing revealed it to be the only variable focal length lens to make justice to the sensor)?

Anyway back to the subject...

On a shoot earlier this year a production tested our Red against Film, Genesis and the Dalsa and chose to use the Red camera for the final shoot.

Did it start with it a B and end with a D?

Illya, musing I heard over at Panavision was that the OriginII is not different than the OriginI. Is this true? What were the visual artifacts in OriginI so if we choose to test Origin we know what to look out for?

First, no idea what project you're referring to.

Second, you won't see any artifacts because even when they did exist it was a corner case situation, and now they are no longer there. You will never use an Origin I in a camera test.

Thirdly, there is real and significant performance improvements with the Origin II (image quality and reliability most notably). It's totally naive to say otherwise.

'Reality'- did the theory actually come from someone who works at Panavision or just someone you spoke to while at Panavision?

A side note- I love the people at Panavision. It's like the proving ground for some of our best employees. (ouch! zing!) :w00t:

All joking aside, I respect and have very good relationships with some of the people at Panavision. I'm sure they look at DALSA as their friendly competition. That's how I see them. There's no reason competitors can't also be friends.

Unless you're just a biased supporter or detractor (there seems to be plenty of those around), I've never understood why *some* people think themselves qualified to speak authoritatively on a subject, especially without even making the smallest effort to know first hand?!?!?!

People in this business have a long memory for being burned (or lied to) by a manufacturer, supplier or crew. People who are misguided enough to think it's an appropriate way to do business seriously endanger their credibility, assuming they have any to begin with. You generally won't remain a trusted advisor for long if you are causing harm or attempting to obfuscate the truth.

As a rule I'm never going to say something definitive about any piece of equipment without having first-hand experience, doesn't matter if I happen to rent it or not. If I do have experience and I'm offering even a slightly controversial opinion, I always end by saying "don't take my word for it, test it for yourself."

Anyone who knows about our methodologies, and views DALSA images (presented correctly) knows that we are in the enviable position of having nothing to hide. It's wonderful to be able to say with all honesty that there is no other digital cinema camera that captures more apparent resolution or has more dynamic range.

Most of the rumors that would get back to me last year were about image quality, now it seems that the people who make up stories try to target workflow. When that happens I just have to laugh it off, and then prove them wrong. Thankfully it's easy, and getting easier everyday.

When I speak with a competitor or hear a "rumor" from someone who obviously doesn't "get it", I try to just remember the old saying "You can't make someone understand something, when their job depends on them not understanding it."

I.
