  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

So Jarred is on fire again at Facebook :tongue_smilie:

So can we expect high performing very small V-lock batteries now? Hopefully they will work with third party v-mounts as well :001_smile:

They look like a nice alternative to RED Bricks. This will allow the use of the DSMC2 top handle to be used

Yeah, although we don't know about their performance. If they are close to the old Red Bricks that would be close to revolutionary, but I think it's more in line of Redvolt XL performance. At that size there would have to be some magic or new battery tech in order to achieve high performance. But maybe Jarred comments on this with "heh heh heh" :tongue_smilie:

Yes, I do agree. Technology is advancing. The guys at RED are all geniuses. So could be possible?? (I hope :D) Theses batteries would be great where the Redvolt XL's are too big and you just want a small light setup for maybe use on a gimbal or a drone? Just a thought. But its great to see the progression of battery technology.

I have noticed Jarred highly endorsing what Tesla do, Tesla have some of the best battery techs in the world so I wouldn't be surprised if there had been some communications... but in the same breath Tesla is just awesome and he drives one, so its hard to say, but if they had some input in new battery design I dont think it would be out of reach to imagine a battery that size that could power the weapon for over an hour... in which case it would be a game changer for me

The industry is indeed in need of new battery technology. Cameras aren't like computers in that computers processors are made to maximize battery power. Camera processors maxes out in order to get high performance and that eats battery life. So while laptop computers focus on processor efficiency, camera battery manufacturers need to focus on better batteries. I think Stanford and MIT have been developing new technologies that enable fast chargeup. Just being able to drive your camera with one battery for an entire day would be such an extreme game changer. Like being able to go into the wild with five batteries and be there for five days almost never turning off the camera or by saving power staying for two weeks without charging anything. And for filmmaking, being able to go to a location with a bunch of high performance V-lock batteries and power both lights, cameras, DIT stations and so on without ever needing to recharge or take a break. The independent filmmaking community will be changed entirely if this is possible. There's so much happening to the technologies we use so if battery-technology would catch up and evolve things will look very different.

And even if batteries get better, they might be used with the same amount of battery time but with much more powerful camera processors. So everything goes hand in hand.

Considering the dimensions of this new battery from a volumetric perspective:

It looks like it is possible to see a much needed refresh for the RedVolt! (Perhaps with a 60Wh capacity)

Depends if Tesla was involved in making some special layered interior design of the cells, if that's the case, we might see higher capacity in a smaller size. I'm really hoping for that. If these are like the Redvolts or XLs that's not really enough power in my opinion.

The Tesla solution is still Li-Ion based, and subject to the same restrictions on Li-Ion content as current batteries.

The restriction is base on the total amount of Li-Ion contained in the battery, which with current technology equals out to about 90Wh of power.

Telsa's (or whomever's) technology is much more efficient, which why the so many new batteries of similar power coming to market are now much smaller (not just Red's). This might allow the possibility that they could create RedVolts with higher capacity that use less than the amount of Li-Ion than these new 90Wh batteries.

This also allow the possibility for 2nd generation RedVolts that potentially have twice the capacity of the originals; a 60Wh Redvolt wouldn't cannibalize the RedvoltXL line and would be a compelling upgrade for all original DSMC owners, in addition to DSMC2 owners using the RedVolt expander.

...or just skip doing new Redvolts and focus on v-locks like these since that's the most common battery mount used in the industry :tongue_smilie:

Current Red owners still have a sizable investment in RedVolts, and RED is still supporting that form factor. It seem like a logical step that supports both old and new owners.

Any of the possibilities neoXL or RedVMount would be great. I have always hated hanging AB's and V Mounts off an otherwise sleek camera - esp now. The XL gets one as close to style and function currently except the XLs of course don't have the requisite power duration if you are doing long take stuff all day.

That said. Based on the picture. I think you are most likely getting your wish come true. As the only configuration that could look like that currently is the V lock base expander with some cool new battery.

I'd take an educated guess that the wide majority of Red owners use V-lock batteries. I know Redvolts work good in the handle to keep it running during battery changes, but I don't think Redvolts should be a priority. The XLs are even less suitable, big and not very powerful. The way to go is to have big v-lock batteries for a lot of power with long running times and smaller v-locks like these new ones for lightweight work. Just the thing that we got Redvolt XL modules in our upgrade packages without the ability to change to a v-lock solution just means there are A LOT of people with brand new XL modules who just need to sell them off. It's a real waste of resources really.

It is the v-lock expander. The base expander doesn't have a USB power port. And based on the light indicator that is very likely to be a battery, so you get a nice shaped camera with a better power solution than Redvolts or XLs. Having the ability to use both these and other brands of batteries is much better than using Redvolts and XLs.

I agree on the waste part of this. Kind of off-camera topic almost. One aspect of Reds Upgrade approach has been the resourceful and thoughtful nature of it. Reusing parts etc... To manufacture a bunch of things that will be so over the hill on arrival does seem not just a waste of owners money - though a lot of the stuff was practically given away in bundles - but an uncharacteristic waste of Reds resources and time too. Maybe it was something of a misfire. Or.... In addition ....they will also have a new XL up their sleeve that means those modules are not a complete waste. Because no doubt the lean and mean is the V Lock with a new battery like that and then the W really starts to be the littlest camera with extremest capability.

Hopefully, they'll have more info on these little beasties at NAB... I'll make a point of heading over to the Red booth after the morning press conference insanity to have a look. :)

(I'm attempting to make it to two press events on opening day... might be a tall order.)

i wish they just gave us a heads up on the timing of these so we didnt invest in full battery systems already for cameras we dont have yet…it would of only helped red and the all the new owners, excited for them yes, but just let us know.

Jarred has hinted at smaller V-mount batteries for awhile now.

Actually, if you look at upgrade prices, they were lower before the Weapon upgrades. Getting an upgrade trade-in like the Scarlet to Epic one cost $9500, if you put on some accessories you'll end up at around $15000, which is approx the price of the Epic to Weapon upgrade. Thing is though, you get almost the same performance out of the Weapon as the Epic Dragon. But the upgrade price is indeed higher than upgrades has been in the past, meaning... we pretty much paid for the Redvolt XL module that I need to sell off now.
