  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NEW! Baselight Transfer

Sven, to achieve the fastest and highest quality de-bayering, the CPUs will be max'd out (in a BLT or BaselightHD) in order to hit 2K 'half-res' real-time. There isn't any 'uneeded power'.

On digital cinema outputs from a Baselight, I meant DCI, not DCP.

I have feeling that finally somebody beats SCRATCH with R3D workflow offer!!???

BaseLight Transfer or BLT.

Please correct me if I'm wrong!?

Who is the next?

Hi Edgar, no, Baselight comes as a tuned system built by FilmLight. This way we can guarantee the performance, and the support.

Thanks Mike. I sent you a PM.

Can the baselight device (HD model for instance) also run other OS/Software packages such as Avid or Adobe? Or do you connect the storage via fiber to external workstations?

Edgar

Hi Edgar, no, Baselight is a standalone tuned system that only runs Baselight software. If you want to connect other applications to it, you have two choices:

- connect Baselight to a SAN (Bright, DVS), NAS (Max-T, Isilon), Avid (Unity), and make it a client sharing other storage

- connect other systems to the same 10GigE network that Baselight sits on, allowing the other apps to read & write to Baselight's local storage. We'd use this techniqe to connect say Flame or Smoke to Baselight.

Hi all, Bobby Maruvada here, Baselight 0082 in Santa Monica. Cheers Mike, thanks for reaffirming that we did indeed make the right choice. The BaseLight is the Les Paul, or Ferrari, of grading systems. My question is as follows, it seems as though this new beast can live in a van, do on set or near set work, and then be brough back to the barn to hook up to my BaseLight. Does it show up in the cloud setup? Can I use the additional cores as a souped up BL-1 when all of the procs are home in the studio? Does the volume show up as say, /images2? And finally, do I take a performance hit if I don't transfer the footage to my regular BL-1? OK, sign me up, call the sales rep and let get one to me now!
I just got back from a red shoot in Milwaukee, and now I feel like it's my birthday all over again and we just got presents! Oh, and additionally, if I put my Blackboard in a road case, will it talk to the new BLT? Is there any advantage of using it or is the JL Cooper adequate..... seems like it would be since it's only doing "primaries"... Oh, and what do you mean by primary color correction? Is it only one layer? Do I still get film grade, video grade, curves etc? The only reason I can see for transporting a BlackBoard is to impress the client... am I right?

BTW, BLT is a great name, I'll have a BLT, hold the mayo, and a side of fries please. Oh yeah, do we need to upgrade to th new GPU based system to see these advantages in the BL-1?

peace

Hi all, Bobby Maruvada here, Baselight 0082 in Santa Monica. Cheers Mike, thanks for reaffirming that we did indeed make the right choice. The BaseLight is the Les Paul, or Ferrari, of grading systems. My question is as follows, it seems as though this new beast can live in a van, do on set or near set work, and then be brough back to the barn to hook up to my BaseLight.

[MG> That's correct, that's why we called it a 'near-set' solution as well as a post production solution.]

Does it show up in the cloud setup?

[MG> Yes.]

Can I use the additional cores as a souped up BL-1 when all of the procs are home in the studio?

[MG> Yes, but with the exception that BLT won't process or generate stacks with secondary CC. If it could, we'd have no differentiation between a BLT and a BaselightHD system. Works the same way as the old Baselight Setup, which is what the BLT replaces.]

Does the volume show up as say, /images2?

[MG> The volume shows up as a second workspace, yes.]

And finally, do I take a performance hit if I don't transfer the footage to my regular BL-1?

[MG> The concept is that you conform off the BLT, which may or may not involve a copy to your BL1 local storage. If you ask any of the FilmLight support guys, they'll explain what's possible with Cloud playback, and the resolutions it works at.]

[MG> In a post production scenario, the BLT is aimed at all non-linear online editing, finishing, and grading solutions. The advantage of using a Baselight with a BLT, is that the dailies grade and the Truelight profile will come across 'uncommitted' with the content. We may offer a CDL output on the BLT in the future, so that potentially all other 'on-line' systems can also get the dailies grade.]

OK, sign me up, call the sales rep and let get one to me now!

[MG> We're working on delivery of the demo units now. We'll get them out just as soon as we can !]

[MG> The JL Cooper really is all you need for primary grading, its about speed rather than finesse for this stage. It's not going to be possible to connect a Blackboard to a BLT though, for product differentiation reasons.]

Oh, and what do you mean by primary color correction? Is it only one layer? Do I still get film grade, video grade, curves etc? The only reason I can see for transporting a BlackBoard is to impress the client... am I right?

[MG> Its primary grading only i.e. no multiple isolations. The film & video grades would still be there though.
If you impress your client near-set, what would you do for an encore when they come in for the main grading session :-) ]

Hello to everyone from Puerto Rico. (first post)

We recently acquired a BL1 and are wondering how would/could a BLT
improve/affect/change our R3D workflow.

Here are a few quick questions:

Can the BLT be used as a remote processing unit for BL1?
lets say I have a project up on the BL1 and want to Temp Degrain some footage, could I send it to the BLT and keep working on my session whille it procces, hopefully auto updating on the timeline:love:?

Will the BLT open BL1 projects and allow me to render them out? Even if they
have tools that aren't available on the BLT package for editing?

Besides the video grade & Film Grade, are the curves and the other basic color tools included on the package (six vector and curves come to mind)? How about blurs, temp degrain and the looks tool?

Is this system going to be GPU accelerated or is this strictly a CPU based system?

Will both BL1 and BLT be able to playback R3D files in realtime, without having to commit them to some kind of disk cache? (not graded, just raw footage)
Does this line quoted below mean that BLT will be able to playback the R3D files at those settings in realtime and its bigger brother the BL1 wont be able to match that? (Talk about product differentiation!!!)

"Sven, to achieve the fastest and highest quality de-bayering, the CPUs will be max'd out (in a BLT or BaselightHD) in order to hit 2K 'half-res' real-time. There isn't any 'uneeded power'."

When are you looking to start making deliveries for these systems?

Which signal path is going to be supported for monitoring the footage? DVI/HD-SDI?

Sorry for the barrage of questions. :pinch:

Thanks!

Hello Mike,

Yes, but with the exception that BLT won't process or generate stacks with secondary CC. If it could, we'd have no differentiation between a BLT and a BaselightHD system. Works the same way as the old Baselight Setup, which is what the BLT replaces.

Does this mean we have secondary if we are doing HD or broadcast finishing on the BLT?

It would be a great reason for me to buy one if the BLT can finish HD 1080p.

Tek

Hi Tek, the BLT is not a finishing system. It is a system for transferring RED rushes to primary graded dailies for offline, or for transferring selected RED rushes to say DPX at higher quality for online grading, editing or finishing. If you want final grading, and you want a Baselight, you'd need to look at a Baselight1/HD/4/8.

Hi Frank,

Answers below ...

Thx,
Mike.

Hello to everyone from Puerto Rico. (first post)

We recently acquired a BL1 and are wondering how would/could a BLT
improve/affect/change our R3D workflow.

Here are a few quick questions:

Can the BLT be used as a remote processing unit for BL1?

[MG> No. A BLT is simply for transferring RED (or similar) content to offline or online editorial content. Its really a one-way device.]

lets say I have a project up on the BL1 and want to Temp Degrain some footage, could I send it to the BLT and keep working on my session whille it procces, hopefully auto updating on the timeline?

[MG> No. Temporal Degrain is a full Baselight feature.]

Will the BLT open BL1 projects and allow me to render them out? Even if they
have tools that aren't available on the BLT package for editing?

[MG> No. Its a one-way device, delivering content to the next downstream system (e.g. off-line editing system, on-line grading system, or finishing system]

Besides the video grade & Film Grade, are the curves and the other basic color tools included on the package (six vector and curves come to mind)? How about blurs, temp degrain and the looks tool?

[MG> In a BLT you have only basic primary colour correction, as this is all that's needed to produce dailies. Blurs & temporal degrain are full Baselight features. Looks would be in the BLT.]

Is this system going to be GPU accelerated or is this strictly a CPU based system?

[MG> As per the BLT data sheet, a BLT has 16 CPU cores and 1 GPU. The CPUs are used for de-bayering & encoding (QT, DNxHD) and the GPU is used for primary grading.]

Will both BL1 and BLT be able to playback R3D files in realtime, without having to commit them to some kind of disk cache? (not graded, just raw footage)

[MG> The BLT with 16 cores will play back R3D half res in real-time. A BL1 with 8 cores will do approximately half real-time playback. But the two systems are designed for completely different tasks. One (the BLT) is a review system for delivering offline and online editorial. It can not finish a job. The BL1 on the other hand is a feature-rish full online grading suite. This is why the BL1 is significatly more expensive than a BLT. The only combination of a BLT and BL1 that makes sense, is the BLT feeding the BL1 with converted RED source material.]

Does this line quoted below mean that BLT will be able to playback the R3D files at those settings in realtime and its bigger brother the BL1 wont be able to match that? (Talk about product differentiation!!!)

[MG> It's all about the CPU core count. A BaselightHD will have the same playback capability as the BLT because the CPU core counts are the same. Therefore both will playback R3D half res in real-time. A BL1 has half the CPU cores and therefore has half the playback rate.]

Which signal path is going to be supported for monitoring the footage? DVI/HD-SDI?

[MG> Both. DVI is standard, HD-SDI is a cost upgrade.]

Sorry for the barrage of questions.

[MG> That's OK Frank, I'm happy to answer them all. I think once you've understood what a BLT is, what it can do and what it can't, it'll become clearer why it has the price point and feature set it does. The BLT is a support system for a Baselight, Smoke, DS, eQ, etc.,it doesn't replace anyone of these systems, in any way.

Thanks!

Hi Mike

Nic hear from South Africa (bl-0127) is there any way to run the BLT software on our existing Baselight HD without purchasing the whole BLT package..

thanks
