Reported to be 30-40% cheaper than Zeiss CP2 lenses.

from cinema5d.com:

"Basically Dante says that these are Zeiss photo primes (ZF.2) housed in a new shell and the Zeiss Compact Primes we know (see image on the left) are one step higher in class. And his version is 35-40% less in price, but has all the filmic compact primes goodness (fixed gear rings, 2 sided scales for focus and iris, consistent 95mm front diameter)

Dante Cecchin says:
To reach this price and offer a serious re-housing we spent months on testing and building many different solutions and the point is that they are not 100% primes (CP.2 is one step higher and anyway not 100% true primes) but for a lot of people the Carl Zeiss lens quality and a Primes feeling with 2 side scales (also for iris) and a rock solid front mount of 95mm is a workhorse choice for digital cinematographers."

Would be interesting if he also had PL mount as an option.
Good thing the Epic canon mount is coming though. =)

VERY Interesting!!! I wonder 2 things. do the lenses telescope out when focused? Do the front elements rotate? How hard would a PL mount option be?

EDIT: What does he mean, "they are not 100% primes"?

Sorry but not really a god option for Canon mount at al, well, yeah for saving money I guess, but the entire point of the RED ELECTRONIC CANON MOUNT is that is...
well... ELECTRONIC, he he, and it controls everything about the lens, including FOCUS, so I see no point in putting anything else but the Best
and newest generation of CANON EF "L" Series lenses on the Epic Canon mount... ;)

Depends on your method Ketch...

Would you really control a lense by electronics on a narrative set ? rack focus ? really ?

Canon EF lenses are probably as good as Zeiss, different look (I like the Canon also BTW).

Canon EF solution is certainly a valid one, but certainly not the only one :)

I have a set of Duclos ZF that i really like :)

I think this new rebarreled ZF (Nikon and Canon EF mount) solution might a valid one also.

Cheers!

Antoine

People who have doubts about pulling rack focus electronically probably haven't ever had the chance to pull rack focus electronically. We love it. Rock solid.

Antoine, you would be surprise of what I do and how I do it, even in a narrative film, times are changing fast my friend, and I sure do take advantage of all that technology has to offer,
I see no boundaries of what I can do, nor do I see any restricting laws written on stone that tell me what I can and can not do, so I do what I want, and experiment with al that I have at my disposal.

You should try it to some times... its fun... ;)

Well said Ketch... As long as its true to your vision go ahead with it. . Red just showed us a glimpse of what the electronic rack focus can do. If we can adjust the speed of the focus ( which I think we can ) it would be pretty awesome.. 100 % or near sure that your subject is in good focus as long as it doesn't move.. It can prove quite tricky to pull good focus under a stressful situation.. Auto focus with a prime lens could be cool on a glidecam for example if it doesn't 'search' too much.. Example while following someone in a building. Options that are specific to the situation.. The more you have the more creative you can be i guess... No honor in pulling all the focus manually. That doesn't make you a better film maker I think.. A better end product does though.. So be glad about the options.. Don't use them if you don't see them fit but be aware of them. You'd probably need them one day..

Hi Ketch,

really ????

I'll give it a try for sure!

For me (and I suspect many others) these would've really been a breakthrough if they were PL mounted. So I went straight to the top - Matt Duclos - here's the answer

"putting a PL mount on the ZF.2 lenses would require a lot of re-working & re- engineering of the rear mechanics. There simply isn't any space at the rear of the lens to squeeze a PL mount on there. Hence the CP.2's"

I guess we're never gonna find the holy grail ( PL mounting ZF2's, Nikon G's or Leica stills etc).

You've gotta hand it to the CP2's, they are perhaps a bigger feat of engineering than first thought.

Hmm ... interesting - if they can rehouse the Zf's this nicely, I wonder if they can do the Leica R 35, 50 and 80 f1.4 - I would pay a premium for that, especially if it could be PL :)

No matter what though, this is a great deal and since many of us will have the Canon mount it's a viable option when we want inexpensive/portable with Epic.

I heard back from Kelvin Kamera and he says they will be releasing some news soon and that the project took a different direction to keep prices lower....we shall see what that means. I am curious if the new ZFs are both manuel and auto focus? Would be awesome to have the option of electronic focus on ZFs with the new EPIC mount if thats the case.
